Water for backyard

Hi everyone, we’d like to install an outdoor faucet for the backyard. Does anyone know who we need to hire to run the pipes and do the installation? Do we need to hire a contractor and/or plumber? Any permit/licensing required? Thanks!

Make sure you pitch the frost free faucet so it doesn’t retain water. I would drain and shut it off for the winter because they do sometimes freeze. For bonus points, see if you can install it so that it can be replaced by unscrewing and screwing a new one in without any sheetrock work or sweat joints.

my uncle’s frost free faucet cracked years ago and since this post, i have been trying to think how that happen. and now i think i know, he left water in it and the house which was coiled next to it. i wish i knew you lot back then and i would have busted his chops for it.

I installed three large rain barrels that are daisy-chained to each other and connected to my downspout. They usually provide enough water for my garden by collecting the rainwater from the roof. I have a soaker hose attached to one and use the others to fill a watering can. This year, I finally had a plumber install a hose bib, a frost-free model with a shutoff and drain on the inside of the basement just to be safe. When we haven’t had enough rain, I use city water from the hose.

Licensed plumber installed ours by drilling a hole in the wood around the window, thereby skipping drilling a hole in brick. Maybe fancier people would do it differently but we aren’t really using that part of the basement for much so it seems fine. Not sure what happens if we ever have to replace the window.
We got a frost free one. I think the job cost around $500?
No you don’t have to drain it but you do have to disconnect the hose and drain that.

I have an inside faucet in the front of my cellar. I’ve just ran a 100’ hose to the back. It’s worked fine for 46 years. I’ve replaced the hose a couple of times to be on the safe side.

You should not need to pull any permits for this work but it really does all depend on the particulars.

so to what cate is saying and what i say above, ASK whoever does it for a dedicated turn off valve inside the house. i would have to bet that if you use a licensed plumber, that is the ONLY way they would do it and i bet it is in the code (but i would also bet that a lot of handymen sorts might not consider putting an inside turn off in). whenever i do any work on my house, i try to slip a valve in to isolate anything so if there is ever a problem, we can shut that fixture (or floor) off but not he entire house.

Hire a licensed plumber. No alt-1 or alt-2 permit required. We did this in 2019 as part of a larger renovation. If memory serves, it cost $800 (or was it $1200?). We turn it off and drain the hose every winter so the pipe doesn’t freeze.

i would just call a plumber and see where it goes from there. if they do not want to bore the hole through the masonry, they will tell you so.

in so far as adding a faucet, if i had to bet, i would say it would require a permit but i will also tell you that if i had to do something like this in my home, no permit would be pulled.

by the way, i have a valve inside the house by which i can turn off the outside faucet, allowing me to isolate it and drain it in the winter. if i do not, it cracks the faucet (in front of the house, where we get less sun). they do make “hydrants” or freeze proof faucets for outside walls; the valve seat is located about 10″ to the inside so it does not freeze and the outside portion self drains once the faucet is closed)

a little history here. way back when we had a job in Jamaica, queens and the outdoor faucet was located inside the door way to the basement. good place i suppose as it would not freeze. but the homeowner told us it was inside the house as prior to water meters, the water bill was based on the number of fixtures a nd outdoor faucets counted as a fixture – so people tended to keep them hidden inside. not sure if that is true, but it is what i was told. thank the meter gods as there is one less thing we can get away with in the modern era.
