Water Damaged Floors, Antique Furniture, & Art

While we were on vacation… a pipe burst in our home… damaging our home and furnishings.

Our insurance company insisted on reconstruction and mold remediation, but left our home shut down for weeks… further damaging the Art and all our Furnishings from water and humidity.

We had our plaster lathe ceiling dismantled. Our 120 yr old parquet floors were pulled up. We had no less than 9 floor pros come to estimate. 100% of them insisted the entire floor must be replaced (approx 1000 sf). Apparently, you cannot patch and match that kind of craftsmanship anymore.

Hoping anyone out there knows of an authentic restorator… conservator. Our insurance company has sent us tradespersons who have no experience in such matters. They all want to strip our (antique) furniture… sand and refinish using polyurethane!! Seriously??

We need ART, FURNITURE, & FLOORING RESTORED.

I hope someone out there has recovered successfully from a similar scenario and would like t o share information. We worked so hard to get our home… we are frustrated that we can’t get help.

Thank you for the information. As a matter of fact, we did have Bestwall come and give an estimate.

We are now in need of a flooring specialist who can either reproduce our hand-nailed large parquet… or help us with another option that suits our home’s environment.
Herringbone has been suggested, as well as another parquet pattern. We found a salvage wood mill that makes nice options. At this point, out of desperation, we are more open-minded about accepting these changes… we just can’t find a good installer.

Our furniture is a mix of Mid Century Modern and older antiques. We have a consoles and a credenza made of book matched Brasilian Rosewood that are in need of repair. The veneer is buckling, and some clown pulled off a tiny piece off the top, in a place that is obvious. Brasilian Rosewood is no longer available (endangered) … so plan B needs to be considered. We have an antique desk which has carved griffin legs. How do you clean flocking and restore this without removin g the patina?? They removed double doors to a closet.. and promptly lost them… likely thrown into the dumpster. They will have to be fabricated.

The insurance company sent someone who wanted to strip all our furniture and “refinish” it. I was so glad that I read the report/estimate before I approved it. Don’t these “experts” know, you NEVER, EVER do that to an antique?? Have they not watched Antiques Roadshow??

The art is in various forms of damage. Stretchers snapped from wet canvas shrinking and popping loose… to paint dislodging from the canvas altogether.

Mold is nature’s way of returning all organic material back to the earth. We will need to prevent the progress of degradation of all our art… before it is too late.

Hi there I had something similar happen and it is a shock to see your ceiling on the floor. I found a company called Bestwall Plastering and so glad I did. They are old style plastering company who work with plaster – and know what they are doing. They have over 35 years experience in plastering and can do the repairs that you need, they also repair/restore the plaster molding and they have experience dealing with the insurance companies.
