Water damage - wainscoting removal & preservation

Had a pipe burst and need to remediate a wall that has original wainscoting. Does anyone have a preferred specialist that can remove the wood detail intact and reinstall once remediation is complete?

for others who read what i said above about cutting the nails and using a sawzall, this is what i ended up doing and this is how you should do this as well:

the nails on top of the panel i broke by slipping a pry bar behind the panel and hitting them with a hammer until they broke. for the nails down low, at the juncture of the base and bottom rail on the main part of the panel, i found a piece of say 1/8″ thick by 2″ wide by 3′ long steel and slipped that behind the panel and moved it around until i found a nail and when i did, i set the end of that steel on the nail and hit it with a hammer until the nail snapped. There were say 8 nails holding the main part of the panel in and by doing this, i did not have to remove any smaller panels and risk breaking the more delicate moldings.

Op does not mention it but since i am now a home inspector and conveyance of information will hopefully become more important than physical labor, i took a moment to explain to him what he can do to maintain the varnish on his front door (himself).

Steve @Homeinspector came by yesterday and helped remove the wood panel for me. He did a fantastic job and it basically went exactly as he described above with the panel coming out in 3 distinct pieces. Very nice guy, clearly knows his stuff. I’m really glad he was able to remove this intact so that I could have the mold people remediate properly without damaging the piece.

We’ve had Phyn for several years. It is amazing and for the price well worth it considering we’ve had too many friends sustain thousands in water damage. Occasionally we get false alarms and our water shut off but it’s easy enough to remember it’s a false alarm.

oh wow. i would not call that wainscotting. call it panels. i was thinking of vertical boards with beads on one edge and t&G which are common in the basement kitchens of brownstones.

these panels will come out in big pieces (this unit will come out in 3 distinct pieces; top cap molding, panel unit itself, baseboard). the tricky part will be getting the top molding off. it is a cap. to get it, the plaster will get damaged but it will be cut anyway? once that is off the top rail (rails go across, stiles are up and down) will be set against probably rough plaster with sq cut nails. those can probably be cut with a long sawz all blade from above if they will not pull out. but there will be more nails down below.

another potential problem is the end. the left side. is that buried in plaster? or did someone add a wall there and go right over it? if it is buried in a wall, i would probably say cut the plaster back and then where the wood will be buried in the wall (again when this is fixed), use a plunge saw to cut down the wood.

the good news is t hat the stiles and rails are made of 1x stock and less likely to crack if treated carefully and the panels themselves are floating in rabbets and are held in place by the panel moldings on the front.

the bad news is that if the panels have to come out to access the nails on the bottom, there is a chance of splitting the panel molding. it is hard to get the first piece of molding out around each panel. once the panel molding is out, the panels will fall out to the front.

there is a break between the panel unit and the baseboard below and that break is hidden behind the molding. so the panel unit will lift off and leave the baseboard which itself will come out with a light pull.

i would not let a handyman touch it. if you wish to talk about it, you can call me tomorrow afternoon late. i am working all weekend and it is possible i can take care of this (i am a wood restoration person).

My home insurance is with Pure, so I just went with the installer they partner with, called Beagle Services, and they installed the Phyn Plus device. I monitor water flow through an app and it’s supposed to learn water usage and detect anomalies (like a pipe bursting) and shut the water off. It was a device that went in-line at the point of entry for the water line. Cost $1,300, but insurance savings more than make up for it. I am hopeful that it works.

Curious if you had an automatic water shut-off device, and if so, did it accurately detect the pipe burst and shut the water? I just got one installed last week, as a pipe bursting is one of my greatest fears in life! The insurance credit for gettin the device was also incredible.

And now this, if blades on a plunge saw will not work because they are too short, a hack saw blade on its own will flex and reach in there and cut the nails. The nails will be thin enough to cut through but this will take longer and most people do not have the patience for that and i bet no one uses hack saw blades this way any more (i keep one in my tool bag as a last resort).

So, i thought of another way to get this off. If each piece is not very wide, you could use a plunge saw to get behind it and cut the nails. But the blades are only 2″ long or so. So the boards would have to be narrow.

If this can be done this way, a handyperson can probably do it.

This is hard. This would take a lot of time and the success may be iffy. I used to think i would do stuff like this and at some point i realized that it is just better to replace the wood. It is the sort of thing if you want to save it you do it yourself. Otherwise, have it reproduced.
