water comes into the basement
sometimes when there is a back-up in the street, water comes into the basement. I was told, there is a devise that stops the backflow that costs $2500. any ideas what that device is?

I had a check valve installed in the mid 90’s , after flooding in basement, and its worked fine. I have not had any flooding since. However, I’m keeping my fingers crossed after reading the cons of installing one.

I have had success with a check valve. Prior to big storm forecasts, i try to make sure the valve is not blocked by debris. My roof drains to the street so I dont have that issue, however. Compared to a basement that was flooding consistently, I think the incoveniences are minimal.

Agree with Eman! Try to avoid a check valve at all cost. I had one that ended up causing more issues than anything

Can someone put a manually operated gate valve in a sewer line? Would it be legal and would it work? For now, never mind the draw back that someone has to be there to operate it.
And a manual diversion on the roof drain.
Is it possible to alternative solutions?
I am of the mindset that if the money is there, anything can be done but am aware that that does not mean it would be legal or will function as it should.

Check Valves are a FlyByNight Plumber’s best sale. They put them in with promises of a dry basement and then do not go over all the fine print.
Seen it too many times.

Jim… the check valves don’t have to be manually reset… they are a simple flapper valve that shuts when the street pressure is greater than the house pressure, exactly like the valve you have on the drain line from a sump pump. And yes, if a large piece of debris gets lodged in them they remain stuck in the open position are are totally ineffectual. There are workarounds as such as retention tanks but they are fairly expensive

Someone… read the entire article… the program won’t be in effect if passed till 2025 at earliest… a check valve is only appropriate if you are dumping your roof water to the street through gutters like the stick frames with pitched roofs in queens

I’ve heard Eman’s point about check valves from many plumbers, and if I remember correctly, after the valve is tripped it needs to be manually reset. Resetting it may be more than a homeowner may want to or is capable of doing on their own, resulting in a call to the plumber every time this happens.
To HomeInspector’s point, pick your poison, that’s a valid point, worth considering.
I’ve also heard from some plumbers that check valves easily get clogged. I’d be interested in hearing what the pro’s here say about that.

Apparently the city council just approved a program to reimburse folks for the installation of back water valves… I saw this somewhere on a Justin Brannan’s social media post.

The problem with installing a check valve on your sewer line is that while it prevents backflow from the street during a heavy rain, it will also prevent house sewage including water from your roof from exiting the building….. so it’s kind of ill advised if you have the standard combination sewer line that also connects to your roof drain.

the kind of valve you are looking for by name i believe is a “check valve”. they have other types of back flow preventers for other situations (reed valve and a vacuum breaker). the check valve has a ball inside that sides downstream inside the valve body in normal operation. in the event the flow reverses, the ball reverses with it and reseats on the (under normal operation) up stream side and the pressure against it from the whatever trying to go backwards holds it in place. these things are very common in industry and come in all sorts of sizes and made out of all sorts of materials.

these devices have been used on potable water lines for years where contamination could back up into the city main. google “back flow preventer for sewer line”. a lot is written about them. i have yet to hear of anyone installing one but a customer of mine was mentioning this last year after they got flooded.
