Water and sewer line insurance

Good evening! I have a question for anyone that has opted for American Water Services sewer and water line insurance. We purchased through our DEP water bill and have been paying for about 2 years. All of a sudden the automatic debits from our bank account weren’t being applied to the DEP bill. DEP isn’t sure why, and I jans the beginning of the week received a bill and paid it. Today I also heard from our handyman that there is a leak in the basement, appearing to come from behind the water meter, and from the water line. No problem I thought! We have insurance. But no, after calling American Water Services I find it was cancelled last week by the DEP for no payment of a bills. I am trying to see if the insurance can be back dated without a lapse, but no one is sure. I’m panicking now wondering if we are going to have to pay thousands to have the sidewalk dig up…anyone else with experiences to share? Thank you!!

Just ask them to reinstate the insurance after an obvious screw up with your Bank or the DEP or whoever it was that that caused the problem. Then wait 2-3 months before you make a claim.
Although that said in NYC for whatever reason American Water find all manner of reasons not to pay out, it seems like 9 out of 10 times. Whereas in Nassau County where I have been buying houses recently, they pay out very easily every time.
