Vinyl vs Red Cedar vs Hardie siding

I would be interested in Forum participants’ opinions about siding choices and the details of options that you chose for your siding project, e.g. underlying insulation choices, trim pieces.

Does anyone have recent cost comparisons for the various siding options?

If you have done vinyl siding, is there a particular brand/line that you would recommend?

Also, please share any good experiences or things to avoid with siding contractors.

Premier Building also built one of my jobs and it turned out great. We used the prepainted hardieplank artisan siding and it looks just like painted wood clapboard. We used the hardie trimboard and the more detailed trim pieces were made from PVC material. For a country house I might prefer natural wood siding but in the city I think the fiber-cement clapboard is the only way to go. It is very durable and fire resistant. Yes they used some sort of air-gap material on ours as well plus added an inch of styrofoam insulation to both the front and back in between the siding and the house. Our utility bills (especially heating) are now 1/3 to 1/4 what they used to be, of course we had 120 year old wood siding covered over with some tar-fibrous siding material from the 50’s or 40’s and no insulation at all other than brick-fill. During a strong NE’ster you could actually feel wind blowing through the house. We are very happy with the Hardie as well as the company who did it.

We have used two different Hardie products, the basic hardie plank and their upscale Artisan series. Both can be ordered smooth which we prefer. Have not heard of trick of flipping the board around as the profile is different.

A technical site has noted that you should use these products with venting behind. As the fasteners penetrate the board, water can leach into the rear at the nail opening. So you want to allow an airspace between planks and the wall/moisture barrier. This can be done with battens or a new fibrous product similar to mortar net. This becomes a rain screen and is good practice for many cladding assemblies. Corner trimming can be the achieved with the standard corner post, but for a less traditional look Hardie can direct you to a third party that makes discreet contemporary corner and trim pieces. These are made of vinyl. This is important as aluminum and the cement fiber materials do not interact well-corrosion can occur.

The Artisan is twice as thick, giving good shadow lines. More expensive, but as an added benefit you can miter the corne rs for clean contemporary look, rather than clumsy corner boards. The Artisan series is not necessarily locally stocked so will require more lead time.

The green house on the left is ours and is Hardie in the lightest grain – its not smooth flat, but isn’t the pronounced grainy look. They did the front and the back and we love it. Our contractors were Premier Building and Renovations from out on Long Island. They have done numerous Brooklyn houses and have a face book page. They did a really good job – removed the old rotted siding all the way down to the studs, rebuilt the facing, wrapped the house airtight, then did the Hardie the right way with a piece of hidden flashing behind every seam. They also built the window trim out of the Hardie material. They also paint matched the caulk and sealant everywhere for a perfectly finished look. I like it because its durable and flameproof and yet paintable again in the future if we ever wanted or needed to.

We got a quote for labor and materials for all three siding types from one Hardie-certified installer and the quote was the same for all three.

I’ve used all three (but a very high quality metal siding, not plastic many years ago). I would use the metal again on the sides or rear of a house but I would always use cedar or Hardie on the front. I have used Hardie on two houses over the past 20 years and love it.

Ceder is great in the country or away from other buildings, but in the City your Insurance will go sky high and the pollution takes away from the nice scent of Cedar so diminishes one of its appeals.
Vinyl comes in many standards; the really expensive ones are pretty impressive, but the cheaper ones look and are really cheap and flimsy. But for the best all round : price, look, environment and maintenance issues go with Hardie.
That said do NOT use Good Guys contracting, a Hardie “recommended” contractor, the only reason I can think they are on Hardie’s recommended list is that they must pay to be on it.
Any decent carpenter that has worked with Hardie will be better than “Good Guys”. Any material is only as good as the craftsman installing it.

We have Hardie plank siding. It is great stuff, though certainly more than vinyl. Cosmetic suggestions:

1. Flat side out, not the grainy side. Grainy side looks cheap.
2. Make sure they really stagger how the pieces line up. Hardie is only 12′ long, so every layer will be more than one piece. There needs to be at leat three diffferent patterns of where the pieces meet so you can’t see the joints and nail patterns so easily.
