Video Doorbell Instal

I would like to install a Nest video doorbell on the front of our house. There was an old intercom bell we removed and had it stucco’d over to match the brownstone last year. The wires were capped. Installing the Nest would require locating those wires and running them to a new hole so the bell could be mounted on the front of the house facing the sidewalk. From what I’ve read on the nest site the bell will run off the same low voltage used by the intercom.

Anyone done this? After install will need to patch the old hole to match brownstone.

Disregard. I now realize the buzzer was in the wood not the brownstone. Think I’ll run a wire from the light bulb inside the vestibule down and through the jamb on and mounted on an angle on the right side of the door which will provide a better view anyway. Not sure about the voltage requirements but will sort that out.

Ahh google maps! The street view has the old buzzer so that gives me a good idea where it is. I’m wondering if that column “column” is hollow, my guess is it is. I want it on the front to sapture as much of the sidewalk as possible since there’s also an alley on one side of us. Pre-Covid I was against cameras, privacy and all that, but if we’re headed back to the NYC I grew up in privacy is the least of my problems. Oh I see what you mean. If the decorative bownstone pillar which juts out from the door surround is hollow they may just find that wire anyway since it’s at about the right height anyway.

I don’t think anyone will approach this from that direction. One presumably would cut a hole in the plaster/drywall interior wall, find the low voltage wire, fish it to the desired new location (which may require some additional holes in the interior wall ), drill a small 1/4″ hole in the brownstone where you want the camera, and feed the wire from the interior. There should be no brownstone patching, but plaster/drywall patching and painting.

I have considered but the wiring has to extend through the vestibule into the front hall as there is no socket inside the vestibule.

The wiring is simple finding someone who can open and patch the brownstone so it looks nice is the more difficult part I think.

Since you previously removed the doorbell, I assume you do not really care about the button activating an exiting bell in the house (the button will send notifications to your phone)? If so, I agree it is likely simpler to just get power to the camera, rather than finding and then trying to relocate low voltage wires in the wall. @Bob Run I’ve thought about that but wold make it a much bigger job I think. Where do you suggest run wires from? I suppose they could be on the exterior split off from the light under the stoop but then they’d be on the exterior.

@JohnHancock I prefer the google doorbell which is only hard wired. I have a nest cam in the baby room already and have an ADT system, Google announced a partnership so their offerings will integrate in the future.
