Verizon Right-Of-Way For FIOS Installation???

Hi All — back in 2011 a note was slipped under our door (literally a piece of paper) saying that FIOS would be installed on our block and I should contact Verizon to determine our eligibility. That led to them send me a one-page blanket right-of-way that everyone on earth, including the subcontractor who was doing their installations, said I should not sign. So it spooked me enough that I figured I’d live with DSL for a few years, my kids would read a few more books and watch a little less netflix, and down the road when Verizon had found another beachhead on the block I’d take advantage of that. So I contacted them a few weeks ago and after much nagging by voicemail and email they sent me…the exact same ROW from 2011. Which I still don’t want to sign. Has anyone else ever seen such a thing? Was anyone able to get FIOS without having worry about Verizon’s asserting their rights to eminent domain, Droit du seigneur and whatever else they feel entitled to?

It sounds to me as if Verizon is asking you to be the entry point. That entails conduit run from the street to the garden core. I doubt anyone else on your block has FIOS since that would mean they already have access to the back yards.

In the letter Verizon sent me back in 2011 and again recently (attached) you can see that what they’re offering me in exchange is… the right to buy FIOS. Not so attractive since what they appear to be asking for is the right to do…whatever they like whenver thy like in this life and the next.
I’m trying to determine whether anyone else on my block has gotten FIOS already as my plan was to let someone else be the ‘entry point’. But have not had much luck figuring that out as we’re the only single-family house on the block.
Has anyone else gotten FIOS for their building? What was your experience? Did you have to sign something like this?

In return for being the point of entry for Time-Warner I got free cable and internet. The only downside has been that they now send me a 1099 attributing the value of that service to me and I need to pay taxes on that amount. Given they seem to inflate the value I will be seeking to reduce my cable package in the coming year to reduce my tax bite.

Someone on your block will have to agree to it if anyone is going to get FIOS. They have to run cables to the garden core. You can negotiate to a very narrow extent for ‘perks’ for agreeing to it.
