Verizon Fios Cables?

Hi All,

Just had Verizon door knock me here on Henry St (corner Clark) that they are wanting to run a fiber for FIOS along the fence line (between Henry and Monroe).

On one hand its good for our building as faster and cheaper internet is a good thing….on the other hand….why they heck cant they do it right and run it in ducts along the street and bury it so that both Verizon and Spectrum can be run in our neighborhood without visual blight of stringing ugly cables.

Is there any rights we have in this area? I’m likely to swap my ISP from Spectrum to Fios (for the speed increase) but not sure I really want to be looking out my window at yet more cables poorly managed like they are with TWC.

Anyone had this installed in your block?

Thoughts?

THEY ARE LAZY! The installers don’t want to run anything properly. You have to see the FUBAR they are pulling on my neighbor? Unsightly and they are boastful about them having to take it because it’s a “for the greater good” thing.

Bob Marvin – I have seen these in the Cobble Hill historic district in several locations. I lived right outside the boundary (across Court) and we got the poles (literally and figuratively).

From what I can tell, the landmarked areas are getting the junction boxes set at ground level, without the fiberglass poles.

On my block the old copper phone wires are attached to the back fence, the result of an old [1920s?] arrangement between Bell and the Lefferts Manor Association. Verizon had to negotiate for the placement of new fiberglass poles with homeowners every several houses. These serve the north side of our block and the south side of the adjoining block. We’ve had FiOS for about a year and a half. The south side of our block still doesn’t have it, but I think Verizon is now in negotiations. It’s a long process, something Cablevision was seldom able to accomplish, so most Lefferts Manor blocks have never had cable. Verizon seems to be far more persistent.

On our block, the Fios lines run on the same poles along the fenceline that also carry cable and copper telephone lines. There is a single entry point from the street to the center of the block (through one large building) and then the fiber runs from there. The fiber lines are generally neater than the tangle of old telephone or cable lines. We were not asked for permission to install, but that may be because the poles are not on our side of the fence line. Periodically along the main FIOS trunk line, there is a junction box with a bunch of fiber ports from which they can run a branch fiber to a given house.

All of those ports lead back to the large junction box that is on a standalone pole on the sidewalk (which is the one ugly part of the system). I do not understand why they could not have buried that junction box. I guess I should just be happy it isn’t in front of our house.

Verizon will use only the existing Bell Telephone easements, to the defiance of logic.

The easy answer is that Verizon wrote the laws that allow them to do this, exempting them from doing what other utilities have to do. They also put up large poles in front of buildings with huge junction boxes, so I guess consider yourself lucky if its in back?!

They are looking to run them along the building OR along the fenceline (on poles).

I said our building was a coop so I didn’t have the right to sign the paper he was asking me to fill out and asked for written descriptions of both systems and photos of any hardware they wanted to install (eg I wasn’t happy signing away my rights without more details).

If they already have a right of way then why were they asking to sign etc?

Like I said….there needs to be a better system than whats being proposed…..

I was told that they must string the FIOS cables alongside the old Verizon phone lines since that is where their right of way is. Is that where they are telling you they must be run? FIOS came to me almost 5 years ago for permission to string the cables on the back of my house (where the Verizon wires are). I have not heard from them since.

FWIW the FiOS cables installed about 1.5 years ago on my block of Midwood Street in PLG are very neatly strung between relatively short fiberglass poles, along the fence-line between Midwood and Maple Street. They’re much neater than the very old Verizon copper wi
res strung along the back fences. We’ve never had cable.

Oh and anyone who does have Verizon Fios, any issues with Fios blocking ports?

I run a few servers from home so want to make sure they aren’t going to interfere with my home network when I upgrade to their gigabit service.
