But, DIBS, my fireplace gas lines were closed off long before I bought my house and running new gas lines just isn’t something you undertake lightly these days. Who knows how many days [weeks? months?] the gas in my house would have to be shut off?

I bought a gas insert from gascoals.net Installed it with a closed up flue. Loved it.

Bob, they have standard sizes but do custom work as well. Based on this I would be surprised if they were NOT able to make an insert for you.

Having seen the one at the James hotel, they look pretty nice. Nothing will be the same as a real wood fireplace but given all the BS about fireplaces in NYC its a great solution.
