Velux skylight leaks during heavy rain

My Velux skylight leaked on Thursday 3/21 & Friday, 3/22 due to the heavy rain. Anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions on how to fix it ?

@HouseFix. A roofer & I check. Per roofer no leak on the roof near the skylight. I sent some photos to Velux and the rep did it was #1 not installed correctly #2 it is the wrong skylight for my flat roofer. The skylight is designed to be sloped or for slope roof. Do you remember who installed your Velux skylights? Do you recommend I contact them for 2nd opinion and other options?

I used the Henry branded one sold at home depot. FYI, the yellow one is less messy to use. Just search for “roof fabric” on their website. No picture handy, but essentially you’re looking for crack lines in the existing tar / flashing cement. I went up a day after it rained and the leak spots around the cracks was a blacker color showing it was still wet / water leaked through. I ended up just patching the entire perimeter of the skylight to prevent future cracks. You can also just slap flashing cement on it without the roof fabric but it won’t last nearly as long. Youtube for videos on how to use the roofing fabric.

Thanks for the reply. It is a flat roof. What type of “fiberglass roofing tape” do you recommend? Do you have a photo of “Mine had a leak at the perimeter of the skylight were it joins with the roof” give me an idea where to check for the leak.

Depends on the type of skylight and roof. If its a flat roof its easy to go up there to check out. Mine had a leak at the perimeter of the skylight were it joins with the roof. Saw a small crack and wet spot in the tar. I patched it up with a bit of flashing cement and fiberglass roofing tape. Problem solved. Sloped roofs would be harder to access, you’ll probably need to call a roofer.
