using split systems with hyperheat and removing a boiler

Hi! I have read all of the past entries and comments about using split systems with hyperheat for a sole home heating system and wondering if there are any updates (all of the posts are about 2 years old). Before I pull the boiler out of a 1937 built home, I want to make sure the systems really are what the sales guy promises (or not), preferably from personal experiences. We have had several installers out to provide estimates and I think the unit sizes are correct, my concern is the overall heating – will it keep us warm? We are the end row house, so one side attached, one side open, about 2100SF that includes a partial basement, air handlers will be in almost every room. We’d love to re-gain the floor space, and a safer passage through the utility room, by removing the boiler and radiators. Thanks!

I’ve lived with hot air heat for >40 years. It IS a bit less comfortable tham radiators, but not all that much worse. The lag time to which Cate refers, with the house being alternately too hot or too cold, can be greatly mitigated with the installation of an electronic thermostat. It was troublesome with our old electro-mechanically thermostat, but replacing that really evened out the heat.

Radiators heat really comfortably and stay hot for a long time even when the boiler is off. Forced air heat of any sort can be uncomfortable — too hot when it’s on, too cold when it’s off, drying, itchy.

We have six different forms of heat in our facility (seven if you count a Modine) and by the far the least liked is the Mini Split for Heating Purposes.

We have mini splits and radiators (hydronic) and one other thing to consider when thinking about relying on the splits for heat is the quality of heat, not just capability.

We have solar as well so when we first installed the splits we intended to rely on the splits for heat at least when it was chilly to save some money vs natural gas usage.

But once we used the splits for heat, we realized we weren’t a fan of the “forced air” quality of the heat vs hydronic.

The splits move air and even if it isn’t drying, it feels drying, especially when the air stream is focused on you. Not a fan. We’re super glad we didn’t pull our radiators.

Just more food for thought.

@sticker, because of distribution mostly. If you have one wall hung in a room, you won’t have even temperatures. You might have some loss/leakage with a ducted system, but you get better coverage. Aside from that, they just look better.

I am not a heating/cooling professional, but I have had dozens of systems installed for me.

We have lost power a few times in Bklyn the last 5 years. It seems to happen more and more every year. We never lost gas access. I would keep the boiler.

Why is that, no permitz?
My understanding when we went through the process and met with installers is that wall hung are the most efficient because there is no loss or leakage since they are the source of the heat as opposed to a ducted system which is inherently less efficient since there will always be some degree of energy loss as heat moves through a ducted run even a short one.

IMO for a semi-detached house, I don’t think wall hungs will cut it. If you do a ducted system, yes.

unless you are running solar and amassing some serious con ed credits i dont think this is economical, even with winters not being what they used to be.

i dream of radiant heat everywhere now that i have it in a bathroom.

Being a heating tech, I have always sworn that splits with a heating component were not capable of heating a house in nyc without racking up incredibly high electric bills during subfreezing temperatures… However I now install mitsubishi hyperheat systems since there is a demand from my clientele. They function down to 15 degrees, but are really expensive to run sub 32. I would be comfortable with a midblock attached house, not so sure about the condition that you describe
