I have the rare opportunity to work on a “green” heating and cooling system with an unlimited budget… three chillers (water and glycol) for cooling and low level heating, two HE boilers for heating and domestic heating at cooler temperatures. Chemo
The company I work at is fixed cost for nearly everything, but once you get a permit involved and inspections it is extremely difficult to get a cookie cutter cost since every home is different. Literally the smallest thing like a broken meter bar can be the difference between 6k and 16K in cost.
I am not saying that once you see a job, you cannot give a ton of options to cover everything but preset options for Installations is not possible. We have tried forever but there are too many variables; the suburbs are much easier than the city.

Chemo…. i honestly don’t now know the cost of this system, since I was brought in after the original system designer/installer died….. but you are looking at 50-$60,000 worth of equipment on the entire job, so you can take it from there…

And depending on your unit, those repairs could be costly. If you have a Smart Pump, that replacement cost is hard enough to swallow by itself!

Spot on. My “green” solar thermal system that is integrated with a high tech condensing boiler and thermal storage system has in 8 years gone through 3 circulating pumps, half a dozen igniter kits and has required enough tech trips in their big vans (this is at a vacation house) to probably have burned more fossil fuel than the system has saved.

I really wish people would understand this point from Jane. I say this with respect but how I see Mechanical Work is always like this:
Installing is easy and can be cheap
Installing correctly is hard and can be expensive
Servicing (especially High End or Complex systems) is harder and can be more expensive
Servicing Correctly (especially High End or Complex system) is the hardest, can take a lot of time, can take even longer for parts and is usually the most expensive aspect.
If I had a dollar for every time I have heard “but my Baxi Luna unit only costs $3,000 dollars brand new” on a unit incorrectly installed illegally in a bedroom behind a washer-dryer….

When we talk about the “greenest solution” we also need to talk about the environmental impact of the fabrication and maintenance of the system. This is especially true of a lot of high end residential construction projects.

For anyone with an unlimited budget 😉 look into adsorption chillers. They use process heat or solar heat heat to cool. While they are often used in commercial settings, there is one company producing a residential model: https://fahrenheit.cool/en/products/
I think they are around 25k, and have no moving parts and no compressor, and they are maintenance free. They require a water or glycol system.
