Underpinning

I heard outrageously loud noises last week on Jan First week of Feb coming from my neighbors basement. Is it possible that he went under my side of the party wall and poured concrete? I spoke with engineer yesterday and this was his opinion. Please let me know what seriously think? Thanks.

Looks like old multiple layers of paint peeling off a wall. The sort of thing you see in a lot of older buildings. Could be result of condensation but oftentimes isn’t. Doesn’t look “structural.”

OK, I think outshine has two sets of questions, and they are getting conflated.

1. Did next door neighbor remove part of the shared wall in december?
2. Did next door neighbor do some underpinning a week or so ago?

They are two distinct questions. Underpinning is something you do down at the foundation.

Outshine says the picture showing cracks in the wall is the result of underpinning, not the alleged removal of a section of wall. But we don’t know that underpinning occurred, just a lot of noise that outshine thinks was made by underpinning. Seem to me those cracks could be the result of a lot of things — excessive vibration, water, etc. What room is that, and what floor is it on, and did you get cracks like that in the wall on any other floor? Might be helpful to see a picture from further away for more context.

And what about the “bump” — do you have a picture of that?

BUT that looks like a plaster wall not a sheetrock wall.
