Two Deck-related Questions

1. Any recommendations for someone to clean and stain our pressure treated wood deck.
2. Any recommendations for how to cover our metal deck and steps down to the yard with wood? I know about the Ikea tiles — but this doesn’t solve the stair problem. Thanks.

Just a side note, pressure treated wood is not a good walking surface. I personally do not trust having children running around on it, or animals who will lick their paws. While they have replaced the chemicals they used to impregnate the lumber, I believe they should remain in areas that are not in contact with people (sill plates in suburban frame houses, beams, and other structural exterior uses). This goes for the soil around the decks where it can leach. If you have an opportunity, when the deck boards look worn, it would be good to replace them with another material.
I think it also burns faster than regular woods but would have to research that to be sure. I think that is why it isn’t allowed for NYC interior use.

There will be no inconsistency i f you use wood/tiles on both the deck and the steps, except at the bottom. There you can have a ground-level piece of wood/tile (or build up the soil) and it will be fine. I recommend wood click-tiles for the deck, inexpensive & you can DIY. 2×10 planks of treated wood for the steps, any handyman can install.

I don’t have any suggestions on who can do the work for you, but regarding the steps wood can be added by bolting through the steel (plate I assume), but if you add wood you’re increasing the riser dimension which could pose a problem both at the top riser (shorter step) and bottom riser (longer step) and this could cause people to trip. The steps therefore would have to be repositioned in order to keep the risers the same height to meet code. To attach wood, drill holes in the plate near the stringers. Use redwood which has it’s own natural preservative. Even better, if you reposition the steel steps, to add a spacer so water doesn’t touch the wood, and countersink the bolts. I’m not sure what you mean by metal deck (plate, grill, galvanized metal decking?)… a picture would help.

Your finished walking surface boards are pressure treated wood? or are you referring to the deck’s structure?
