Trespa Exterior Home Siding

We’re thinking about using Trespa Pura NFC siding for the back facade of our home. The sample looks great, but I worry that the faux wood look may look cheap on the house. Does anyone had positive experiences with Trespa or other wood siding alternatives?

A fair amount of corrugated metal siding in Greenwood Hts. it is also the siding of choice in much of downtown reykjavik — holds very bright colors really well.

LOL I was waiting for that – knew it wouldn’t take long… will have to go rent tin men on netflix. That aluminum stuff is pretty cool though and worth a look. If you’re doing exterior insulation, the rain-screen systems for cladding are great alternatives.
BTW – The Trespa has a pretty good product as well from what I’ve heard. The price is fairly high tho..

The concern is “silica dust”. Anyone who works with Hardiboard – for their own sake – hopefully does as you suggest, contain it. OSHA is not quite as confident that such precautions are being taken however. There are alternatives to Hardie. All are likely to cost a bit more as Hardie is the low cost provider. While alternatives may cost a bit more, in some cases the install labor may be less for a variety of reasons. Mine is just a suggestion that Hardie is not a panacea and having a look at all your options is generally sound practice.

We have hardieboard and know a bunch of others that do, as well. I don’t know anyone who has had a problem with the planks cracking and falling off.

Solid aluminum board siding may be a better alternative – see http://al13.com/v-line-system.html
Hardie is a cementitious fiber cement siding that requires face nailing, which then requires the face nailing to be painted and maintained. The material splits and cracks easily so if the installer misses small hair-line cracks, guess what falls off after a while. Also there are or will be some environmental concerns given the dust generated when cutting the stuff. I’ve had good luck with the hardie plank siding. I use the the smooth finish and the “artisan” line which is a little thicker and looks just like painted wood clapboard. I’ll attach a picture of a house with this – it’s on 13th street in Park Slope.

Add my $.02 to the view that the fake woodgrain looks fake. But best to judge for yourself. If you are at all near the slope, stroll 14th street between 4th and 6th Aves, and 11th street between 3rd and 4th. All of these blocks have houses with hardieboard planks, both smooth and grainy side out. I think the smooth side makes for a classier look when painted.

The green house (Hardie) in the picture above is ours (Thanks Cate!). It’s in the finest artificial woodgrain level of the 3 they offered and we chose it over the flat because we wanted an ever so slight aged look. I agree the heavier grained finishes don’t look that natural, but to us the completely flat finish also didn’t look natural. So we took the finest grain and are happy with it. Since this picture was taken the cedar on the left has aged somewhat and is showing a natural grain in some areas where the varnish has aged off, so if they were to ever paint I I believe it would look similar to ours. The owners to our right are getting new Hardie installed with a new cornice in two weeks which will complete our row.

We did Hardie in front and vinyl in back and it looks great. We didn’t use the fake wood grain cause it looked cheesy. Flat is typical for Brooklyn but for suburbs and LI the wood grain is the norm. Premier did our work and they were great to work with

Call up a supplier and get a sample. They may charge you a few bucks, but it’s a lot cheaper than finding out too late.
