Trees and Sidewalk Program
Has anyone used this city service? The tree outside my house has lifted the sidewalk a significant amount. It has gotten to the point of being dangerous to pedestrians. Yes, I know I can just have the sidewalk replaced. However, it is obviously the tree roots causing this, and, will continue to cause issues. Any thoughts?

I have seen some areas where they shave the protruding concrete to even it out.. They also apply some type of finish on the concrete so it doesnt crack from the fix. This might be cheaper option for you and let the city replace it long term.

Thanks for your input. It is very obviously the tree, but I need to fix the sidewalk before someone gets hurt.

I had a similar problem and was issued a violation to repair by the City. I responded to the violation with a claim that the street tree was creating the problem. Eventually, the City’s contractor will come and repair the sidewalk and deal with the problem. Therefore, you dont have to get a permit and dont have to make sure that the new sidewalk is to code. The contractor is responsible for all that.
This may be a risky strategy, but you can call 311, and describe the problem. They should come and inspect and then you can claim that the tree is creating the problem.
Talk to your insurance company, but I would not take this on myself.

The Parks Department is the City department that maintains street trees; not only pruning but also dealing with trip hazards. Call them, their office is in the Lichfield Mansion in Prospect Park, or at least it was the last time I had dealings with them. The tree has to be looked after before you can “replace” your sidewalk.
How wide is the sidewalk? The Department of Transportation; the agency that governs sidewalks does now allow tree boxes as large as 6′ x 10′ to allow for the roots; 6′ from the curb + at least 3′ of remaining sidewalk to the fence of your front yard, I believe are the measurements needed. Then apply for a metal tree guard so that people still cannot walk into & trip on the roots.

Best bet is to file a compliant for the city for the Tree or sidewalk repair. If the tree is healthy, it really doesnt matter how it affects its surroundings. The city might come out to redo the sidewalk, if you are lucky.
