Does anybody have a recommendation for an aesthetic tree pruner? Or a Japanese garden expert?

Thanks for the input. I’m going with Arborpolitan. I ended up reading some negative reviews of Urban Arborists, just not into the vibe, plus couldn’t get an appointment for a whole month. Whatever, I’m sure they’re great once you get the ball rolling.

urban arborists will charge you $200 just to come out and give a quote and then they apply it back later as a credit, so there is no point even calling them if you aren’t going to go through with the job. i take that as a testament to the quality of their work and that they have many repeat customers.

I’ve used Urban also. They are expensive (and their office staff can be snooty __ go figure) but they know their stuff and have a very good eye for reshaping a neglected tree.

i just used urban arborists to trim a large silver maple in my yard. their minimum charge is $600 for any job, and that is what they charged me for this. Last year was the first time the tree was trimmed in probably 20 years and for that they charged almost $1200. Remember this is two dudes literally climbing the tree with chainsaws hanging off their belts. These are tree ninjas and they are not cheap.

I’ve had Arborpolitan out many times to prune our several smaller (and one huge) trees. I’ve asked them just to shape some of them up sometimes and always been happy with how the trees look–sometimes they don’t really looked pruned but obviously look much better.
