Tree for front stoop area
Anyone have any recommendations for a hardy tree or bush that would do well in a big planter in the front stoop area? I haven’t had much luck with the ones I’ve tried.

Blue atlas cedar is very pretty — and evergreen. The planter will stop it getting too big. They do need to be watered, of course. Dogwoods, weeping cherries, and eastern redbuds are lovely too.

You can pick from anything sold as a “foundation plant” i.e. sold to grow close to a suburban house. My neighbors grow small evergreens, box, and Japanese maples. On the shady side lots of holly. I’d go for something that will stay green.. Avoid flowers for now, they’re more work and some can’t take freezing temperatures (like rhododendron).
I have had an arborvitae survive over 20 years. It is planted in a 20 inch diameter concrete container. It is sunny in the afternoon. It it is watered every Sunday with a hose and in the summer it is watered almost every day when I pick up my mail., about a 2 quarts of water.. I put some fresh peat moss in the pot each spring.
You must be willing to establish a routine for potted plants. They are alive like pets, or children, and they are being asked to grow in a situation that is not their natural environment. So you have to provide what they need. When the plants and you get used to each other they will be more easygoing.
An arbor vitae really wants to be an 80 foot high tree. Keeping it in a relatively small pot limits its vertical growth by constraining the roots.. After 20 years it is about 10 feet high. As a comparison, I planted a similar evergreen in my yard, in soil and got lazy about things, and now that tree is taller than the Empire State building. 🙂
A good nursery {Shannon for instance) will be the best place to advise you. Home stores may be cheaper but they do not give you advice.
