tools stolen from work site

Several Dewalt tools have disappeared from the house we have renovating, presumably taken by one of the GC’s workers or one of the subs. Value about $300. Plus a few smaller items, like a bike pump. Does anyone have any experience with this or recommendations about what, if anything, to do?

I just got off the phone with a customer who wants me to do a job when they go on vacation later this summer. I have had the keys to houses and worked in houses for decades and have never had a problem or been accused of anything. But with cameras so cheap now, i told this customer “do us both a favor, put a camera in the house, just one at the top of the stairs.” its all around better for everyone – the customer does not have to be concerned that workers are doing things they shouldn’t and the contractor does not have the worry that their reputation will be compromised over something they might have had nothing to do with.

To ceci’s point, if other people who are not under control of the gc had access to this property, it might be hard to pin it on the gc or his/her team. If it was the gc and his people who only had access, he may wish to accept some responsibility.

Tools walk all the time. It’s part of every job every day to look after them and lock them up at night. $300 is a small initiation into this. I have several job sites of varying sizes and scopes running at all times and we’re constantly turning people away that pose as different delivery companies and various authorities, all trying to gain access to the site to steal the tools or take inventory to come back at night. Insurance companies don’t even pay for stolen tools anymore. Doing business in this city is a fool’s errand.

Unless you know who specifically on what crew did this it is going to be hard to do anything about it. It is rare that we hear stories of this nature and it is less likely to occur when a contractor has a steady crew and relies less on transient help.

When i have worked in places where there are other crews working, sometimes a newish helper on one of those crews will grab something of mine not realizing it is not their boss’s item. If we don’t get the tool back quick, it can leave with that crew. I often chaulk this up as unintentional.

A bicycle pump though? That sounds intentional and desperate.

When i am not part of the main crew on a job, i feel a lot safer when there cameras around watching all of us.
