Tool to drive trim into masonry?
Hi everyone, quick question — looking for some sort of simple tool that can affix thin wood trim directly to a brick wall. It’s just picture rail, not crown, so there’s no way to put blocking behind it … if this were a regular wall I’d just use the nail gun but obviously that won’t work on brick.
I looked up online and found several different types of gunpowder-actuated guns, but they’re all around $1000 and MUCH more power than I need for a 1.5″ strip of trim! (actually, am sure they’d completely obliterate the trim and just drive nails into the brick for no reason) 🙂
Am I missing something? Is construction adhesive and prayer my only option? 🙂
Thanks!

Just use construction adhesive. Loctite makes fast set adhesive that will set up after holding in place for a minute or two. Powder actuated nails and tapcons will just make a mess of your trim.

I’ve seen contractors use liquid nails or a nail gun using masonry nails to attach baseboard molding running up the side of our chimney. IMO the nail gun worked best — or at least later removal was easier than with liquid nails.

Picture rail … use dabs of PL with dabs of hot glue to secure in place until the PL dries, once the PL is cured it won’t go anywhere. Then use paintable silicon caulk to finish the gaps just like you would with a regular trim install. If you decide to use fasteners you should still consider using an adhesive like PL or you will get movement.

You can skip fasteners and just use poly adhesive like liquid nails or PL, hold the trim to the wall with cinder blocks or sandbags until it’s cured, or put dabs of hot glue to stick it on until the poly cures.

Probably best to drill holes for very small plastic anchors (as the metal ones would be overkill for a picture rail). Epoxy them in and they’ll hold anything. Another method might be to epoxy the picture rail directly to the brick, simply holding it in place with some duct tape to dry. Even using a tube of construction adhesive should work fine.

Remington makes a very low cost gunpowder-actuated gun, which is hit with a hammer to fire
However I think you’d be better off with the sort of anchors Arkady mentioned, although lead might be preferable to fiber.

Very small Rawl plugs? Maybe the old fashioned ones made of fiber?
