Toilet recs needed

Anybody suggest current models that you are happy with? I want something standard, reliable, and no fancy features needed. Extra points if you suggest someone to replace it.

Longer story: We have a weird toilet that is broken and finding replacement parts isn’t going well (I’ve tried two plumbers who said they’ve never seen anything like that) and the things online that look similar from that brand are pricey at $80+, slow to ship, and may still not work. All that to say, we may be looking to replace it ASAP (we like having a working toilet, what can I say) since we’ve never loved it–it’s a dual flush model that has never worked quite right.

The Toto Vespin 2 we ended up with is a winner so far. Flushes nicely and the actual flush handle has a nice feel when using (perhaps odd to say, but we’ve lived with toilets that had wobbly handles) so hopefully that holds up.

Toto. When we renovated several years ago, it was the only fixture that the architect said “you have no choice, you must get Toto.” We have three, and have had no problems at all and are very happy. Parts are readily available on-line, even the soft-close seat.

I replaced our other seats with them years ago and love them! Less touching of the seat and lid since you don’t have to gently lower it.

I sent a message to DSNY’s twitter account and they confirmed if the toilet is ceramic or porcelain it can be placed out with your normal trash.

Thanks for all the replies. We will hopefully have our new Toto Vespin 2 here and installed early next week. My list for the plumber also included the Toto Drake and American Standard model 211.ca.004.020, all of which seemed like good options we would have happily taken.

Next question-how do you get rid of a toilet? I’m using a plumber from a big company doing the work on the side and he’ll pick up the new toilet, install, and place the old one outside. Will the city pick it up?

LOLOL thanks Bob! But my recollection was that the Toto “universal” fill valve — i think that was the main part at issue — didn’t fit my particular Toto. Ironic I know.

It was a older Toto, so I’m assuming they’ve moved towards more universal fittings since then. Who knows? Regardless, the property the toilet was installed in was sold — it’s now someone else’s issue.

@anotherposter — I Toto-lly hear you! With so many things going on at the house, decision fatigue has set in. Deciding what work to do yourself, then when you do hire, finding and choosing contractors, finishes, tools, materials, etc etc etc etc, I’m DONE hunting around for crap if there’s a chance I don’t have to!

I have eight Toto toilets in two houses. Nothing but good experience. The parts are readily available locally and online, and I think we have replaced one flapper. Four are eight years old, and four are 3 years old. Toto has much wider style selection than other brands. There at least used to be a display only showroom in Soho

@booisgolden I see. That sucks and I feel you on the constant stream of little things around the house. Mine are really piling up as I can’t seem to find anyone with any skill to actually do all of them–everyone seems to only want big jobs and it’s frustrating.

Found a plumber like who will even pick up the toilet, but I need to make decisions and it’s still hard. Like, do the pressure assist flush type hold up and have easy to find/replace parts or should I limit to gravity flush? Who knew how many decisions you need to make just for a toilet!

@anotherposter yes, true — after first round of replacing flush valve we did take photo of model number but the replacement valve and other parts became harder and harder to find each time.

So initially it was just a bit more effort but it became more as time went on – and combined with the other 850 things we have in our house that require “just a bit more effort” it added up to a whole lot of effort that I just don’t have the mind (or time) for any more.
