Toilet gets lazy every winter!

Here’s a fun one that google can’t seem to help me with. Every winter, the toilet in our extension starts getting lazy – half the time it doesn’t flush and needs some plunging to get moving. This seems to be seasonal and the issue just resurfaced again this weekend. It’s on the second floor, right below the roof parapet. Nothing seems to be blocking the vent (from my very unschooled eye) and every time it warms up, the toilet gets right back to normal. Everything I’m finding online talks to frozen pipes, which is obviously not the issue here. Ideas to solve this mystery?

yeah, I probabaly should have said leaves.

In all honesty, I would probably call a good master plumber. you looked down the vent and saw nothing, so at this point I would call in the experience. this is not normal, and thus we can’t be sure (esp on a forum) that the plumbing is normal either.

@New Owner, not sure if that’s safe. I’d try pouring an entire container of bleach into the toilet and flushing at night after everyone is done using it and then in the morning you can check to see if that helped. Bleach acts as a degreaser and you’ll know if that is possibly the source of your issue.

Cate, I meant that as a joke. I was on a roof with my father as a child and put my nose over one. That was 50 yrs ago… never did it again.

I suppose those gases are poisonous. Methane and all sorts of other things.

Maybe the waste pipe is exposed to the cold and the oils in the drain have any easier way to solidify. See if a drain opener temporarily solves the issue?
