tiling whole floor instead of hardwood

I currently have hardwood floors but don’t like the color and shape of them. Do you think its a good idea I should strip it and put tiles all over the house?

I cannot tell from the photo if OP’s floor has stain on it as well as poly or just poly that has ambered (it looks like mine here and but the dark lines in some of the open grain make me think it was stained as well as poly’d). also, now that i am looking at the floor on my laptop, i can see that the boards are not as tight as i thought while looking at it on a small screen. and i have to admit this: i have never sanded a floor that had been stained, just poly’d so i am not sure how stain behaves around the crevices between the wood, say if someone had redone an old floor and stained and poly’d and that got down into the loose spots; in truth stuff like this might really show up on a floor that will be left as light as possible. i am not sure how deep the stain goes between boards and if it will leave dark lines. and if a floor is stained, it may very well have been done with applicators that have gotten into tight spots.

A pro who does this day in and day out will know what to do in this situation but this is what i would do if this were my house and i am thi nking about sanding the floors in my house (myself): i would sand with 36/40, then 60 (in truth, when i sand a floor, i sometimes make a quick run with 60 to break the surface a little and then go to 36 and back to 60 for a proper run). I would stop after 60 and inspect the floor. if i saw stuff (stain/finish) down in any spots between boards, or in any cracks or if there were any cracks, i would get down on my hands and knees and remove this stuff and fill cracks that are too open and deep to deal with otherwise. i would then sand with 80 and 100.

what i just said is only a thought and one of the guys who does floors day in and day out may have a better opinion.

also, now that i have seen it on the laptop, i would most definitely say it is red oak, not white.

A full sand would take that back to it’s natural color. One might worry that some of the dark stain remains between some boards but the wood appears tight so that should be minimal. If any remained, some had and knee work would take care of it. I would bet a good bit that it is red oak. See what boo is saying.

@steve Yes! Our floor guy used it on our very yellow/pink original softwood subfloors upstairs. It looks great and counteracted almost all of the yellow/pink shading.

We’re super into the “old as new” floor finishes /treatments and had wanted to use something like the Dinesen lye to “bleach” out the yellows/pinks but our floor guy was like “why do that when you could do the Bona Nordic Oil? It will save you money and time and get you same effect.” I was afraid it would look too white but the Bona instructions are correct-you can build it to go whiter/more Scandi or apply less and have a more subtle effect. We did one coat and it covered the harsh undertones but kept the natural look.

We’re super happy and it looks great almost two years in.

OP you should check the Bona out for sure and we loved our floor guy- he did our downstairs as well with the original parquet with inlay in Pallman Magic Oil. He knows his stuff and was a great person to work with. If interested I’ll post his info.

Steve (and “C”) –I’ve never done any floor refinishing; that’s something I’ve left to pros. I would think that going to a lighter color might be difficult, but a professional would know better.

FWIW I think the current color of C’s floor is very nice, but that’s just my subjective taste. When I had the parquet floors on my parlor floor sanded and stained , long ago, the floor-sander used a dark stain he called “coffee”. My ground and top floors were left natural–no stain–just poly. They’re still much darker than what C wants.

Let me add this: the first step is light colored red oak. The coloring of red oak is very random and if you sand a floor it will not all be this light.

This is the landing in my house. In front of the landing is the old varnished red oak. The first step is recently refinished red oak with an un tinted water poly on it. For red oak, it does not have that heavy pink hue. Look at the landing. In the middle of the band is red oak I laid down and probably coated with tinted basic coatings. Look at the outer band, that is 1920s wood which I sanded off with a hand held ro sander. Not too heavy. I coated it with the same poly as used in the middle. It retains more of the dark color as I did not sand as heavy as I did on the first step. Some of this is a crap shoot. Some can be controlled by sanding better and using a modern drum sander will remove all of the old varnish on the face but you can be left with some between the boards or in deep cuts.

Ok, first. You should find out what you have in so far as wood. I will not be able to tell by a photo here. Even in person, I may not know for sure unless I can look at the end grain. If it is white oak, and by far most of the old wood is NOT white oak, you can sand it and it will lighten. If it is red oak and you sand it and put water base poly on it, it will lighten far over the dark amber of the old varnish but it will not become what you have in the photo. Even in my house, we have red oak and sometimes I wish to brighten the place up and think about sanding this off and going with water base poly which so long as it is not tinted, will go on clear. But red oak will still cast a pinkish hue. I redid mine in my kitchen using water but the poly I used is tinted and I cannot recall if I laid white or red oak -the graining looks red- but because of the uncertainty of the wood and with the tinted water poly, I cannot give you a good comparison photo.

I see some flaking in a board as if at least one piece is quarter or rift sawn. Common to see on oaks.

It was not bleached. It is white oak and it most likely has water base poly on it, un tinted.

It can be sanded and stained to any color. If you chose to sand it and simply put oil poly on it it would come out a light honey color and would age to an amber.

You are lucky to have that floor. People pay a lot of money for it.

I guess that’s as good a description as any; you’ll have to compare it to whatever color charts the re-finisher you choose uses. It’s very light; perhaps the existing wood would have to be bleached after sanding to achieve a color like that?
