Thorocoat Exterior Building Paint - Does it hold up?
Time to paint the back of our building. We would like to use a dark charcoal color. Having problems finding this exterior color as a sealant. Questions: are there other products who have up to date color choices? If using a dark paint color, will fade? (strong afternoon sun).
Thanks!

Please don’t put plastic (acrylic) paint on your historic brick. It’s not appropriate and is potentially dangerous (for the brick and for the environment). Instead, look into using mineral paints, like such: https://limeworks.us/products/mineral-paint/

Thorocoat is breathable but dont confuse it with Thoroseal which is NOT. Here is direct link to Thorocoat specs/data sheet. https://www.master-builders-solutions.basf.us/en-us/products/wall-coatings/high-build/masterprotect-hb-400
We have it on our side brick wall and its been holding up for a few years.

We painted our “east” facing wall with a beige/offwhite thorocoat back in 2017 when we rebuilt the deck, has held up really well albeit only 2 years so far
I’d use it again.

Does this coating ruin the bricks ability to breathe? Or is is it fine? Someone clarify this once and for all

We have Thoroseal in beige/white. I think it comes in light grey. I agree a dark color will make the wall hotter in the summer. That is why a lot of roofs are silver now, to deflect heat. Yes it holds up, our wall is brick and its the back of the house. Our old house was brick and we had it repointed instead.

What direction is your facade facing? If it is facing west or south I would advise against a dark color because it will attract a lot of heat thereby increasing your cooling load.

I believe Thorocoat is a breathable membrane/coating, not a seal, which is the problem (brick breathes).

FWIW Thorocoat has held up well on the rear of my house.

We were told by some not to use thorocoat because it doesn’t allow brick or stone to breathe. What is the material of your facade?
