Tankless Boiler Venting
look at the venting section of the installation manual for the make and model of your boiler. These are available online. BTW while PVC is acceptable for intake air, you can’t use it for the vent…. should be Polypropylenene or stainless steel (Z vent)

as somebody who had a high efficiency boiler venting nightmare cured by gennady i can attest that his knowledge of this stuff is truly extraordinary.

here is 1.6′ E.L. info on innoflue venting
Keep in mind when hiring GC, that plumbers are not boiler professionals, except the ones who specialize in heating exclusively. Usually, these contractors are not a part of the team of contractors working with GC. while GC is not considering heating a special trade. 1. I wasn’t looking looking for additional information. However there were additional posts with new information. Gennady took the time to post some things and I wanted to respond. That’s it. Didn’t think there was anything wrong with trying to understand what he was saying.
2. I’m not obsessing and sorry you felt that way. If you go back and read my responses – I’m trying to understand what’s being shared because I want to be informed and I need to document this for arbitration.
3. I am hiring a new GC so yes trying to do that.

Hire a competent heating professional to redo there venting and go over the job. Stop obsessing over the details and find someone with a good reputation and let them do their job.

The 87° turn only creates pitch when installed in one position. Your elbows are all over the place. Janedrew, what are you looking for in this thread?

Guest User | 5 years and 2 months ago

1. I figured out the 90 is 87 degrees to give the vents pitch. 2. I found a picture of the metal ring that you referred to. I haven’t figured out the 3″ is equivalent to 1.6′ part… [Metalring](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:NICE:metalring.jpg.jpg)

This is very detailed and helpful. Thank you so much!! I understood 3-6 . I did not follow #1. I assume #2 is about the connections to the Navien. I believe those are metal.

Few notes:
1. Innoflue 90 is actually 87 and 3″ equivalent to 1.6′
2. All hub connections must have metal rings or other approved means to mechanically secure connections
3. Polypropylene has high thermal expansion and must be installed to allow it. I would never allow to embed exhaust pipe in concrete.
4. Exhaust pipe within living space must be enclosed in fire rated enclosure with access doors for inspections.
5. Exhaust pipe must be pitched according or exceeding manual requirements, as there might be a lot of condensate couterflowing the combustion products .
6. 12 elbows to me is a sign of something very wrong.
Judging venting issues, you are dealing with amateurs, and there are most definitely other issues there.

Thank you Master Plumber. I spoke to the distributor and they said said “If they’re not pitched properly, it’s a big problem. That, distance and number of elbows is critical. Breathing is a necessity.” I am getting a new GC and this will get sorted out. We’re planning on abandoning the vents in the slab and starting over.

Vent pipes are frequently inaccessible so I can’t say there’s any immediate concern for having buried them in concrete…providing they are well installed (i.e. joined and pitched properly). However, the pictures you sent do not inspire confidence that the installers were proficient in boiler venting and I’m willing to bet you’ve got other problems with the boiler installation. If I were you, I’d keep in touch with the factory techs or enlist a reputable heating company to assess the rest of the installation.

Thanks again for your help. The one unanswered question I have is why one should not bury vents in the slab. I would think they need to be accessible in case something goes wrong . However are they any technical reasons not to… Such as risk of damage from radiant heat, lack of pitch in a flat floor etc?

Master Plumber, have sent the picture via email. I didn’t understand the elbow/allowable length that Eman was explaining till I reread your post and the manual. Thank you for your patience and explaining it again.

Thank you for looking out Chris. You have astutely summed up the exact reason I was worried Since I am looking for a new GC I have been walking through with plumbers. Some commented on the number of elbows and material but I didn’t understand it all fully as we’re also looking at other things (I have other problems too) After the helpful comments here I read the manual to understand more. The DOB plumbing division alerted me to the vent termination issues. A GC balked at the vents being under the slab but he and i decided we should just abandon those and figure out a new pathway. Slowly and methodically, I am now beginning to understand the full extent of the issues. I shudder to think if I had let them finish the job. Thank you all for the advice.

My advice is to call in (another) professional to take an evaluation. As the other two mentioned, you are dealing with a serious issue; exhaust and Venting is dangerous when not done correctly.
It would not do it justice to simply leave this to advice via a forum

Chris we can always use your brain too 🙂 I am reading the manual. Reduce the maximum vent length accordingly for each elbow used:
● Each 90° elbow equates to 5 linear feet of vent
● Each 45° elbow equates to 3 linear feet of vent
