Sump pump sound
For the first few years, during heavy rains, we could hear our pump under our bed make a slurp and burp sound when it was activated. However, we haven’t heard the burp sound in a while. In fact on Monday night, we listened intently and we barely heard the slurping sound. I opened it up and it was moist, but no standing water. I had to clear out about 4-5 inches of muck. I poured a few buckets of water and it seems to work fine, but I’m not sure how much I can trust it, given that it sounds different now. Thoughts?

We use the company that did the sump pump install – this was done under prior homeowners and the warranty transferred to us. But we have been happy with them. Quality 1st Basement Systems: https://www.quality1stbasementsystems.com/

greenwood8, May I ask who do you use for annual maintenance/inspection?

A relation of .mine used to pay me to clean out the sump in her basement. It would get all sorts of living debris inside of it. I stopped doing it about 15 years ago simply because life got too busy. For a while no one did it and it clogged. She now has the maintenance and cleaning of it on contract. At some point it failed and the people who had the contract took care of repairing the pump and cleaning the water damage. My mom may have hers on a contract now as well.
If i remember, i can ask about these contracts and what they include.

We have an annual maintenance inspection with our sump pump installer – costs about $200 for peace of mind to make sure everything is in working order and the back-up pumps are operable etc. Something to look into?

That is a lot of guessing for lay people. With the bigger units that we have had in commercial buildings, they tend to make more noise as they age or need service and sooner or later they fail.
My mother used to have ONE pump in her basement boiler room on the south shore. During sandy a lot went wrong, not the least of which was the pump. She now has a back up pump. The back up pump has an adjustable float on it and this serves two purposes: if the rain is so severe that it overwhelmes the first pump, it will kick in when the watet reaches a certain level. It will also kick in if the main pump fails. Of couse these are hooked to a standby generator.
With the intensity of these storms and some of the flooded basements we keep hearing about, a back up pump might be the way to go. Then you can use the other a little longer with comfort and maybe have someone look at it. Or if it is cheap, replace it (the ones in big building had grease fittings on them and were designed to be serviced and rebuilt, these smaller ones and off brand ones, not so or not wo rth it). A back up pump is easy to install, it can tie to the same pipe with the addition of check valves so if one is down the water does not flow back through the kaput one.
