Sub Pump *pipe* replacement
Hi All – We had a sub pump installed in 2013 or early 2014 by a plumber. He is retired now. The 12 inch pipe has rusted we not sure why. Attached are some photos. What type of pipe material (metal, PVC etc) should be installed? Do they sell it with the rings on each end? Where in Brooklyn I can buy it?
I went to Home Depot and Lowes they were didn’t have it. Thanks in advance. I am not working now so I want to try and fix a few things around the house. Mine has pvc all the way to the pump. No issues. I am going to take a wild guess your plumber had a threaded galvanized pipe in his truck and no threaded pvc coupling. If you are unsure take your pump to home depot, find the threaded coupling and dry fit to be sure. You can buy the rest of the pvc to fit the chase as well. Its rather easy and very diy’able. It’s a sump pump, not “sub” pump, and PVC is the preferred material, and is code compliant in NYC in this application. In some commercial applications, no-hub cast iron pipe and neoprene fittings are the better materials, but that’s not this, and I shouldn’t even have brought it up.
The first piece out of your pump is a galvanized nipple that screws directly into the pump. Replace it and your next fitting will be something that adapts from the male end of the nipple to PVC. Or in your case, what’s there now is even easier. You’ve got a one-way “check” valve with hose clamps making the transition from galvanized nipple to PVC. Yours is a very common residential installation. Don’t let anyone make this more complicated than it is. Both/either Home Depot/Lowe’s will absolutely have everything you need and if they don’t, then you’re telling them you need the wrong thing.

@restorationcontractor I think the guy just wants to sell me the more expensive pipe. He kept saying the PVC install would required more work. Attached is the photo of the sub pump.Is there something I should use to clean it? [Subpump](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:0uG4:subpump.jpg.jpg)

I don’t see any reason why PVC would not work and definitely last longer. I think the section of galvanized pipe is included with some of the pumps when they are new.
You could replace with a piece of galvanized from the plumbing supply but why?
Unless there is some NYC code issue that I am unaware of?
I have several sump pumps connected with just PVC & no issues at all.

@restorationcontractor thanks for the suggestion. I went to the plumbing store before I read your post. They told me to get a replacement with the same material or galvanize steel pipe. Is that a good idea? Does PVC last longer?

Looks like there was an issue with galvanic corrosion between the galvanized pipe and the pump itself. Why not replace it with PVC, and PVC threaded adaptors glued on both ends?
