Aah MMS congrats! I wish i had posted sooner, but for anyone who does this in the future i used a sawzall with a raw wood blade, plus a bottle jack (and some 2×4 underneath) and a crowbar (and a shovel i believe) – oh and a sledgehammer. I can’t imagine you did this with a hand saw – using the sawzall was still a ton of work. others trying to do this should keep something in mind: look at the op’s original photo. the stump had been sitting for years, decaying and softening. by the looks of it, at least three years. if this had been a freshly cut tree, even one cut say a year before, this would have been a bear of a job.

Got it! Dug around it, hacked at it and hand sawed a part that wouldn’t come apart. ~ 2 hours of work. It can be done! – [Screenshot_20200818-185049_PhotoCircle](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s2/:brownstoner:7FO5:screenshot_20200818185049_photocircle.jpg.jpg)

Exactly Steve—I did ask for brads and the “salesman” didn’t have a clue. In the course of our conversation it became clear that he also had no idea that that exotic old-school tool called a “hammer” had anything to do with nails.

@bob:
if he does not know what an old fashioned nail is, does he know what a hammer is used for?
if you really want to confuse the poor guy in the orange apron, try to tell him that the 18 (and smaller) gauge things that go in the nail gun are brads and those larger than 16 gauge are nails.

i took a look at the video. part of me thinks that these guys have more time and would not waste a tool like a chain saw on something like this. many people reading this might not either. in our case, the day that person called me, he needed it gone. I think someone was pouring concrete in a few days. so he compensated me enough to risk the cost of a saw and we had it done in a few hours. i like the idea of a demo blade on a sawzall though, i know it would outlast a chain saw chain. op should try that first and i will certainly have a sawzall on hand if i ever try this again.

Ha yes i understand about HD. I did what you said, dug around them and used a sawzall on the roots. Most people think trees grown down, but they grow out. If you can get all the roots around the tree cut, with some elbow grease it will come put. The problem I ran into was the stump was too big to even get it through the door of the house. I had to use metal wedges and a sledge hammer to split it in half.

RE: orange-aproned imbeciles, I recently encountered one who couldn’t understand that there were nails that didn’t go in a nail gun. Usually they know neither where things are nor WHAT they are.

the reason i used the cheap homelite is i figured we would throw it out at the end anyway. but it was still good. four chains or four chainsaws? it sounds like your idea with the sawzall worked better for you but i wonder if digging out soil from around the roots would have worked.
i just read your post carefully and see you dulled it on the wood part of the operation. i am wondering if you overheated the blade and ruined the temper. was their sufficient bar oil? also, i have found metal in wood and trees – even bullets. they will kill a blade (i know, a brooklyn tree stump will not have a bullet in it, but anything is possible;; a nail from a fence say; i once found a .25 caliber bullet in a door in carrol gardens once so anything is possible).
there tend to be “work arounds” for most of these things we encounter. yours was the sawzall. perhaps for others, a chain saw will work. i am going to watch your video.
still, don’t listen to people in orange aprons. they kill creativity.

This is from experience, I went through 4 chainsaws. I removed two really large stumps, look at the photos I attached, mine was twice the size of the original poster. When he asked me if this was for tree stumps, I said no and used it. Dulled in minutes. Bought a brand new $300 chain saw, Dulled in minutes. Neither of then touched dirt, I was just trying to cut it in half down the middle. Bought a $69.00 sawzall that plugs in, not cordless and was able to get it out. If a blade was ruined, for $9 dollars I replaced it. Here is the video where I learned how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ1e-d4gX8A

@gregbrophy: the home depot guy did not want you putting a chain saw to the earth because it wears them in all sorts of ways. we did not rent one, we bought one of the $125.00 homelites they sell, just for the job, that way i did not have to listen to an unwanted opinion from someone wearing an orange apron. the saw worked as expected. i think i might have even stopped a couple of times and refiled the chains before disposing of them.
everyone on here should keep something in mind: if you have to ask a person wearing an orange apron or even some of the younger people in the newer paint stores ANYTHING besides how much something costs, you are already in serious trouble. the fist mistake is asking them; the second mistake is listening to them. they know some of what they are told by others who have little first hand experience themselves but they themselves have ZERO first hand experience. that guy who told you what he did about using one to remove a stump had NEVER put a chain saw to soil and i would bet he never used one to cut a log (i had done both by the time i was 14 with a very large McCullough chain saw; i have cut steel with a chain saw; i know it sounds crazy but this is why you don’t let a 14 year old use your chain saw). if they do not sell you the wrong thing or give you ass backwards advice, they will let their own ignorance become a restraint (and sometimes that caution is justified; but with a little work around, sometimes whatever can be done). that said, in your case, the rental person probably was justified as he did not want the saw ruined (the bar, the clutch, other pieces besides the chain that dirt can wear down; i had planned on throwing the entire chain saw out when we were done with it but it still works).
if someone does this with a chain saw, it might be a good idea to dig some of the dirt out around the roots first. also, as with any cutting, always cut the stuff that will not damage the blade first, the parts of the stump away from the dirt, the top of it, and then use the already worn blade on the stuff that will destroy it.
so long as people on here understand the risks associated with what they are doing, they should be willing to try things. that is how guys like myself learned. over many years often trying things that others said could not be done and by making mistakes. i know, it sucks to make a mistake and ruin a $150 tool and worse, waste 4 hours on sunday afternoon organizing the material and buying things only to find out that something won’t work, but making mistakes is the BEST way to learn – so long as you understand you might damage something along the way (and so long as no one gets hurt). fortunately, for a lot of us a little older, having grown up in a different time and place, a lot of this kind of learning is behind us (and was done at someone else’s expense; that was my father’s chain saw i mention a couple of paragraphs back).

I brought in professionals to do it. They saw it and said no way can you get this out. A stump remover won’t work. I managed to get it out with a lot of digging, a sawzall with a 9 inch blade and a large pry bar. It takes time but it can be done. A chainsaw will dull the second it hits dirt. I tired it and it didn’t work. When I rented one from Home Depot, the guy asked me – you are not using this to remove stumps right? Chain saw. Two or three chains as the soil will burn through them. Three or four hours for two people. Hard work. Dirty and sweaty. A good bit of digging. Someone gave me a grand to remove one this way a decade ago. We bagged the pieces and carried them through the house.

Thanks everyone. We have neighbors on each side and just renovated inside so we don’t think we can get a stump grinder through. We’re going to try hacking at it like it’s an office space printer and see where that takes us.

If you don’t need to dig out the area, you can cut it just below the surface of surrounding earth. Then cover with dirt. Worms, etc will take away within a few years

Cut the stump off as low to the ground as possible, drill it full of 3/4″ -1″ holes till it looks like swiss cheese, and then cover it in chemical stump remover… in a few weeks it will be spongy and rotten enough to break apart with basic hand tools… Chemical Stump remover: https://www.amazon.com/Spectracide-Stump-Remover-Granules-1-Pound/dp/B004GVYXKC

A stump grinder if you have a driveway for yard access, alternatively a big axe and some elbow grease and a decade or 2 for the roots to rot. I know thru experience…
