Hi! I am not sure how I missed this. We needed up having a friend who is an engineer walk through . Then our architect. Followed by our contractor and a contractoR friend . Before finally believing nothing was truly wrong just settling .

Most likely the condition you described is because the headers at the stair opening above the living room and the second floor have sagged. This happened over time when wood that has shrunk or is of insufficient capacity. Sometimes a plumber has cut into the header or joists which reduces their strength. The typical fix is to beef up (sister) the joists at either end of the stair opening and sister the header. This entails opening the ceiling. You also want to make sure that the supports under the headers exist and carry the loads down to your foundation.
This is probably not an emergency but it might be a good idea to get opinions from a good GC or an engineer so you know what you are dealing with.

Yes. Many. But we were doing a large reno so it was fine. Just call the engineer- it doesn’t mean you have to fix anything but at least then you know.

Purchased a 1930’s tudor style rowhouse. Had inspection nothing seemed different from any other house we looked at. Sagging floors, minor termite damage. .. upon moving in the floors feel much more spongey. And the hallway second floor and living room firt floor both sag next to stair case. Should I ease my mind with a structural engineer visit?
