Structural Engineer Quote Advice
Hi all,
Have done some searching around and can’t find clear guidance on what a reasonable fee is for a good structural engineer. Embarking on a brownstone gut reno in Bedstuy with an experienced architect who has tapped a structural engineer to consult. We are adding a roof deck on top of a back addition, taking down some interior walls (scoped as ‘semi load bearing’, which might be a way of saying not load bearing?), and reframing some skylights, plus misc reframing work exposed by the demolition.
Any idea what ballpark fee might be appropriate for this?
Appreciate the help.

I used Mike Rabkin at Andrew Goodrich PE when needed to underpin my house. I got 2 quotes for the same job. One was $10k, another $4k. Have no idea how much Mike would charge for what you need, but his No (347) 787-3338.

Site visit 4hrs, loadbearing wall review 4hrs, deck review 4hrs. It doesnt sound like there is anything complicated for your experienced architect to deal with, in my opinion the engineer is only needed here for sizing columns/ beams and specifing connections. I am familiar with a company who uses a PE for exterior deck work – and charge $275/ hr for his services.

Would be super grateful if anyone has had any experience here.. The single quote I have seen is making my eyes pop. Have combed the archives here and not seeing another thread that might address.

Sorry I realized that was unclear after I wrote it. Addition already exists, just plopping a deck on top of it. Structural engineer is making sure the structure can handle same.

Are you adding an addition as well or just adding a deck on an existing one?
