Structural Contractor recommendation?

We actually did a recent project with a great contractor which required extensive interior steelwork since we were removing interior load-bearing walls and he also used steel C-channels to open up the back of the house and make the rear wall into a full wall of windows which sounds very similar to what you want to do. No basement digging on our job though, but my guess is he could handle that. He’s definitely worth a call. I’ve been meaning to post a recommendation for him since we finished the job and your post was good motivation.

The company is Design2Build and the head guy is Seth. His cell is 917.379.3300.

We met with so many contractors and actually picked him off of the recommendation of a neighbor who did a full house gut renovation with him and had great things to say about him. We really wanted to find the right contractor because the structural component felt risky to us (one mistake and the back wall falls down!) and felt it required a contractor who specialized in structural work and so we didn’t want to go with just a basic contractor who usually jus t does new bathrooms and kitchens and more standard stuff.

Everything went incredibly smooth and he was great to work with and also just a really nice honest guy which, having read the contractor horror stories, can be a hard thing to find. Good luck with your project!

If it were me, I actually would work with a structural engineer, one that has experience with townhouses as well as bigger buildings. We have worked with a number of engineers over the years, mostly limited in scope to one area or project. The last ones we engaged really know what they were doing and were able to assess the entire structure properly, and it has been extremely helpful. Money well spent AFAIC.

Inspection found a cracked support column in the cellar of our townhouse. Our inspector recommends that we work with a structural contractor rather than an engineer. He did give me a name, but warned me that this contractor is in high demand. Any leads or advice?

I’d have an engineer draw the plans and then bid it out.
