Stoop Vestibule Gate

I am considering removing the iron gate under my stoop and not replacing it. It is a pre-made modern gate which does not look great. Does anyone have experience with a under stoop vestibule without a gate.

I agree with the others: keep a gate for all the reasons mentioned. We found an antique gate at the salvage yard near Lowe’s in very rough shape and not the right size or shape. Vinnie’s Italian Arts adapted it to fit our space.

If you don’t have a gate a would-be burglar could enter and work on your ground floor door out of sight of passers by. Also, if you don’t like your modern gate I’m sure an ironworks could adapt a vintage salvage gate.

The same thing happened to us. The area was being used as a bathroom and, while the house was empty, a sleeping area. Got a gate within a few months of moving in. I really like having it as an area for packages and a deterrent. The tenants lock it at night, but we leave it unlocked during the day so packages can be left there.

I bought a building that had no gate under the stoop; it was constantly used a “bathroom” and hence stank!
A gate was installed early on in our ownership.

All over my neighborhood. Only problem is that people break into basements with easy cover, and also those packages USPS leaves under there are stolen regularly while my (usually unlocked) gate acts as a deterrent.
