stoop front slab?

as a part of my neverending adventures in stoop repair i have come across a decision i have not had to consider – how i want the slab of my stoop area to look. the former stoop slab was just some pitched concrete to allow for proper drainage, but i am wondering if theres any creative ideas for ways to get a more traditional look without breaking the bank on say bluestone.

Cookthebooks, we went around and photographed every front yard we saw to get an idea of the paving pattern and garden layout we wanted. Our mason offered two ways of handling the curb/transition from paved surface to open dirt and we picked one. The paved surface is slightly inclined to direct water runoff to the sidewalk, and the mason automatically included drainage holes so the water wouldn’t back up where the paving transitions to the dirt.

You can use pavers or brick instead of bluestone if you wish. We recently had the hardscaping of our front yard redone. Theoretically, using bluestone instead of something else adds about $2000 or so to the cost — but the base cost is extremely high. They will dig up your front yard, lay down concrete etc. as a base then cover in whatever finishing material you choose. Whatever the finishing materials are, be sure to inspect and approve them before they purchase and install, to make sure you are getting whatever you pay for (true stone instead of engineered, etc.). We left an open space of dirt in our yard for a planting bed and it has a small curb around it with drainage holes. We’re not sure the new garden reduced the paver cost any but it looks nice.

i am definitely looking more for that classic bluestone look with stamped concrete. think that probably makes more sense financially and is perhaps lower maintenance? still weighing pros and cons. would love more information from anyone that has experience doing this either way.

i was able to settle on one contractor who was large enough to really take the ball and run and be well equipped to deal directly with the insurance company. for instance they were quickly able to secure money to secure the steps from a liability standpoint in the short run. think they are pretty ambitious in what they are asking for, but what do i know. frankly they were the only one who was actually showing signs of moving forward at pace. grenadier was my next call, but this outfit is definitely more in keeping with them.

OP, i am wondering what you were thinking. the cement plates that can be “set” onto the underlying structure of say bricks or the poured kind bob posted photos of? not to knock bob but the poured thing reminds me of what my grandparents had in the ‘burbs (though they had not yet advanced to dyed concrete). and in so far as dyed concrete, you know, they have all sorts of powered dyes for this; the stuff we see them putting on brownstones is dyed with a similar powder.

and how is your contractor search going? i just realized i know two union masons. BUT these guys are not people who work for companies who do restoration work. but as a contractor, i have long ago learned when you are in a bind, you have to start calling people and asking questions. if you are in a flux, i can call and ask them if they know any companies. Did you call Grenadier like i suggested?

I had my stoop redone with tinted concrete, in a color similar to the original bluestone. It was approved by the LPC, so it’s considered appropriate. I no longer get leaks in the under-stoop storage area.

we have stoop problems here and water leaks in a freezes and pushes the bricks apart. i had been thinking about laying concrete slabs on top but never looked at where to get them. i have seen them though, they have scalped edges made to look like rock. about 1.5 to 2″ thick. I know they make them the depth of the tread as i see them, perhaps one of my neighbors has them. but then i was wondering about the top. i would need one large one (like 4×5) and i never went further. if i would not be so busy today, i would make calls to get us both an answer. i go out on LI alot and see these kinds of masonry yards around. also, something i notice about these kinds of slabs, the concrete is finer, so it does not simply look lie the sidewalk, but more like stone with a mild polish. i like slimc’s use of the word tint. tinting concrete is easy so i imagine some of these places will have them pre tinted.

I think you can have concrete tinted and “stamped” to make it look like natural stone – they do this around pools sometimes.
