Steel back with glass
Good afternoon all,
I am currently renovating my brownstone and opening up the back. I want to do steel with glass however I have heard that it’s not the most ideal when it comes to insulation and during winter time (cold draft ). Has anyone went the steel route and if so I would love to hear some feedback. I am currently installing central air/heat and there will vents coming from the floor right infront of the steel/glass back. To help counter act any cold drag . Will that help ? Other option will be to go with aluminum which I’m not the biggest fan of since I’m limited in a certain design that I want to go with. But if steel is not ldeal , I’d go with aluminum. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Sal

@Saleh, I think it is probably all of those things. We certainly have friends who have not had these issues. Unfortunately, none of them seem easy to address so I have not taken it on.

Also is it because of the extension ? Maybe poor insolation?

@nf85 is it the issue of the steel or poor installation on your installers part ? Could the installer have don’t a better job ? The reason why I’m asking is because I spoke to a few people who have steel with thermal break and have no issues in the winter.

I’ve posted about this before here, but we have steel doors as well as a very large window in our (kitchen) extension and while they look fantastic I can’t recommend them. Ours are custom, with thermal breaks, and yet in the winter they are freezing–on cold days they literally measure in the 30s–and we routinely have ice on the inside surface. Fabricator and installer were not responsive and they cost a fortune. We’ve had them reglazed before but they are clouding now so I suspect the seal is broken. If anyone can recommend someone reliable to try to mitigate the damage I’d love to hear it, as far as my experience–I’d be very wary.

Any combination of windows and/ or doors will open up back wall.
Steel will get the slimmest look.
All Aluminum will be a bit more chunky.
Aluminum clad units will do a really nice job too.
Going to direct glazed units meaning non venting will get really slim sightlines across the board.

@randolph something like in this recent Brownstone post: https://www.brownstoner.com/interiors-renovation/interior-design-ideas-brooklyn-brownstone-british-chic-louisa-roeder/
This is obviously not cheap either, but it’s cheaper than the whole wall of steel casement windows. I’m doing something similar to on a current kitchen reno but without the bay window. Getting Marvin Ultimate French Casement line for our window over the sink plus a door that looks like a french door w/panels. Painting them dark color, which allows the outside/green to be more visible. Again, these Marvin windows aren’t cheap but much cheaper than the steel.

It’s hard to get an energy rating from many companies that manufacturer steel windows. Yes they have thermal breaks and glazing choices but I’ve had difficulty pinning them down to a tested rating.

Hi,
Lets understand that there is steel and then there is steel.
Alot of the steel going up is localy made, or is non-thermal.
The local non-thermal steel will be cold, and will have condensation on the bottoms.
Real steel windows are thermally broken, cold rolled, with full energy ratings, and are mostly made overseas in Europe. (where they have been using thermal steel for close to 20 years).
Warning no budget allowed

Did you look at thermal break steel windows and doors? They apparently perform much better in the winter than the standard steel and glass. However they are very costly.
