Steam radiator reinstallation
I moved into a 100 year old house two years ago. The seam heating system worked very well. The paint was pealing on many of the radiators and I had them removed by a “master plumber” and sent to be refurbished. The cast-iron radiators have been returned and the plumber’s workers reinstalled them. The plumber promised he would carefully balance the system, but his repair guys didn’t do any balancing ( there had previously been small wood planks under some of the radiators; the repair guys said the legs on the radiators were already different heights and the system was balanced. Now three of the radiators on the first floor are spewing significant amounts of black/brown water out of the side vent (the vents are new). Although he claimed to be an expert and charged me as such, I do not believe has as much experience as he has claimed. And he hasn’t been involved, just his repair guys, who do not have experience with this type of system. I am looking for an expert in old steam heating systems. Can anyone recommend someone?

Angry? LOL. Where’d you get that from the posts above? Besides, you.proved my point in spades. If you really believe only a dealer can fix your car (well, maybe if you have a Tesla), because only he has the secret codes and gizmos required, I can see why you think only a master (generically speaking) plumber is the right man for the job.

My peers didn’t comment on my pricing. You’re an angry man, cmu. Let it go.
I know my worth when my clients tell me what other advice they’ve been given time and time again and what money they’ve spent trying to make something happen that isn’t available to them and at times using costly methods that are completely incompatible with the desired results.
I take my car to the dealer every time. Always have. His price is higher because he’s got all the information, the right parts, and all the tools.

Oh let’s not get personal. I have evidence from your own words, where you said you’d charge more that $500 for a steam system evaluation, which even your peers thought high. Good for you that you can do that. But please don’t blame me for pointing out that overcharging is the American way, and many will, indeed, be suckered in.
I used to do work on my car decades ago. Now I don’t because I don’t have the required diagnostic equipment, so I pay for all repairs. This is expertise I don’t have, so it’s ok. But I still don’t go to my car dealer (the “master?”) who charges twice what my local mechanic does.

cmu hates me and thinks he knows something I don’t. But he doesn’t. So he can chagrin his way to the moon and back but that won’t change a thing. My “exorbitant prices” are what people pay when they’ve grown weary of dealing with people who guess at this stuff for a living.

Annie, seriously, any handyman could fix the pitching problem. In my experience, there are things you pay a lot of money for and things it would be foolish to do so. You have to learn from experience. As one who’s a mech engineer and has done lots or reno over the last 2 decades, I’ve found, to my chagrin, that ‘experts’ are quite often wrong., or unwilling to change ingrained habits (I probably do that myself in my work.) I’ve been lucky in that I can figure out most things myself, and only pay the exorbitant prices so-called “master” plumbers charge when I absolutely have to. So, caveat emptor.

Can either of you @ Master Plvmber or eman134 recommend someone with expertise in steam heating. Thank you for your recommendations. The radiators have been pitched (air vent side lower) and valves fully opened. I am looking for an expert with specific steam system experience.

Water spewing from the air vents of steam radiators is a symptom of a systemic problem and rarely ever an issue with the vent to radiator itself. Just saying.

make sure the radiator valves are fully open and, as above , make sure that the radiators are pitched with the radiator valve side lower than the air vent side

Several on this board could help, but learn from experience. For this job, you did not need a ‘master plumber’. You could also just have had them painted in place, it would have cost you a fraction of what I suspect you’ve paid, though it would not have been as smooth as having a strip & redo.
“Balancing,” by the way, means adjusting the heat rates of the radiators (which hopefully should be unchanged if you didn’t change the vent sizes.,) which is an expert’s job. You mean ‘leveling.’ Anyone could do that, perhaps even you with a 9″ level. Pitch them towards the valve slightly (1/8″-1/4″ or so) with some washers (or quarters!) under the outer legs.
