Stairway to hell?
Happy New Year to all!
We would like to repair/restore/rebuild the staircase in our bed sty brownstone (3 flights).
All the staircase companies I contacted only focus on replacing risers and steps. They do not however do any stripping, staining etc…
As you can see (pictures below), we need to strip and re stain the railing and replace the balusters as well. Anyone have any recommendation or advice?
Also, if you have done this kind of work before, what is a rough budget I am looking at?

i second what cate and rich have said.
if stripping the balusters is cost prohibitive, just sand and paint. strip everything else. maybe the staircase itself needs repairs, but don’t let anyone talk you into replace any of it. you will destroy significant value in your home by doing so.

The balusters appear in beautiful condition. Why would you want t replace them? As Rick said, a paint stripping and refinishing company can strip and stain the staircase.

Contact a paint stripper company if you want to refinish what you have . If you want to replace it with new, contact a stair contractor. These are two different skilled trades .
