Stair reno

I’ve purchased solid birch treads and solid birch risers thinking that solid was the best way to go. I had an installer come last night who said that the risers should be plywood and not solid as they will crack when installed. I’ve just spent $150 on the risers and have stained them! Is this true? I called another stair installer who said the same thing. Looking for more opinions. Thank you! 🙂

I understand what the installers are saying but, FWIW, the risers in our old brownstones are solid and I haven’t heard anything about anyone’s cracking–mine haven’t.
