Stained glass transom repair

Hi –

I’m replacing the rotten old windows in my landmarked townhouse.

The window company is telling me it’s my job to get the stained glass transoms out of the current frame, replace the sash, and give them to the window company to re-install in the new window. Is this normal? Shouldn’t they deal with that part of the repair? If now, any suggestions on who should?

Also, since a big reason for this replacement effort is the insulation aspect, and the transoms are just single pane, they’ve suggested adding an additional new sash behind (which is to say on the interior side) with double paned glass. Has anyone else done this?

I had someone call me on the upper west side and there was and old window and sash on the outside just like brokelin is saying. That might be the way to go. They wanted a new sash for the stained glass and wanted it mounted to the inside. I tried to pass the job off to heights. Nit sure what they ended up doing.

I don’t see the need for a new sash on the inside if it is a transom (as opposed to a window you can, and want to, open.) Neighbors of mine with the same stained glass transoms I had installed a piece of plexiglass on the exterior to insulate and prevent warping – I don’t recall if the stained glass repair people did that for them, or not, but they might have. I don’t recall there being a separate sash installed – if I recall correctly , it was added to only one of three stained glass transoms above bay windows (the most warped one), and I don’t remember it looking radically different on the outside from the other two – though maybe it was installed in a very thin wood sash, or in the existing stained glass sash, or put up against or near the stained glass sash with minimal trim pieces to hold it in place. Enough people have done this that the stained glass repair shops should be able to help you with options.

We had a similar issue. Had the stained glass repaired by Larry Feldman (Feldman Stained Glass) – took a long time but we’ll worth it. We did add a second “modern” window to protect it/seal better, but it’s on the outside. That way we get the benefit of the unobstructed stained glass in our LR and helps keep stained glass from warping (direct southern exposure). It’s worked very well for 11 years so far. Good luck!

Check into interior storm windows for the stained glass also. Interior storms may be less obtrusive than a second window and they are easily removed when heating/cooling season is over, should you wish to do so. (Alternatively, some may use exterior storms to better protect the stained glass.)

Presumably you’re working with Landmarks and everything you’re doing has been approved by Landmarks. FWIW, original windows properly maintained plus storms in the winter do a better job of keeping out the cold air and are certainly more beautiful and green (less wasteful) than replacement windows. These days you can get easy to use interior storms that just snap in and out in a jiffy.
