Sprinklered stairway
Hello,
I’m considering renting a 5th floor walk-up in a non-fireproof building. There are no external fire escapes, and there is only one interior stairway. The stairway, however, is sprinklered and therefore (as far as I know) in compliance with the code.
My question is whether or not a sprinklered stairway is actually a reliable/practical means of egress during a fire. Chiefly, I’m concerned with whether the fire might render the stairs unpassable, even after it is extinguished, as well as the permeation of smoke.
Any insight would be appreciated, thank you.

I’m certified for residential sprinkler inspection. In 70% of fires, only one sprinkler head will trigger, and this is effective for containing 98% of incidents.

If you are on the 5th floor, chances are you would go up and across the roof if the fire was that bad.
