Spiral staircase for deck
Hello, this is my second post. First post had many helpful replies. So, I am going to putting a new backyard deck up. I have a semi-attached house. I understand that per regs I have to have a 3′ setback from my property line (my semi-attached neighbor’s house) unless my deck is going to be noncombustible. Assuming I’m going to put up a composite deck, I’d like to put a metal spiral staircase on the side of my deck that abuts my neighbor’s house, rather than my side yard side, otherwise there will be a weird-looking 3′ gap (his deck goes right up to my current illegal wood deck). I’ve attached a photo of the current layout so you can understand what I mean.
Since the spiral staircase would be metal and therefore noncombustible, does anyone see any issues in placing it in that gap? Are there other considerations I am not even cognizant of?
Thanks in advance.

File and build it full width from steel – once its signed off you could put down ipe tiles for example. I had intended to do this but was happy with the 2″x1/2″ steel flat bar floor once installed – I also didn’t want to reduce further light to the basement floor.

I’ll present this to my architect, that may be the way to go .

Thank you Randolph, I saw an older post on Brownstoner where someone had what looked to be a metal deck with wood inserts, but the last 3′ was just metal grating, allowing the homeowner to go full width. The poster said he put some wooden planters over the grating after the fact. I would prefer to go full-width so we can keep our existing metal posts and beams.

mine is a steel frame painted black with a steel railing and the surface is concrete, for now…….we had it built 2″ lower than the door to the house and also had the top of the metal railing be flat so that at a later date when we can afford it we can put down wood over the concrete (either some sort of prefab paver system or something more custom, not sure yet) and top the railing with wood as well. I am not sure what the code if for wood over a non-combustible deck but we passed inspection with just the metal and concrete.

Randolph, I would like a metal deck but my wife is opposed for now. What would floor surface be, tile?

spiral stairs are the worst, why don’t you just have a metal deck built that mimics what you currently have?

BTW I’ve heard of people doing most of deck in wood then the adjoining 3′ to your neighbors in metal– think I’ve even seen pics of it here on forum so maybe consider that too.
