Sound proof fence

Can anyone share recommendations on what material to use to sound proof a fence or a company that specialize in sound proof fences. We are on the garden level and have a chain linked fence.

dork, the concrete and block walls were either too expensive and the op had second thoughts or he or she is out in the rain today, digging the footings themselves.

i wanted a block or brick wall here. when i saw the price tag i thought “i have always wanted to get a pilots license and own a cessna 182”. i still have neither.

OP has posted and ghosted, maybe they were at their wits end due to a noise issue. Shit happens I guess.

I’d guess any solid material will be better than a chain link fence, such as a wood or pvc fence. A masonry wall would be better, but an order of magnitude more expensive. I guess it depends what kind of result you’re expecting.

Another possibility to consider is a small fountain/water feature. I’ve seen a few people use those in the backyard very successfully to drown out other noises. But at the end of the day, you can really expect only so much from an outdoor space in NYC.

Neat fact: sound diffracts over walls. Your best bet would be a cinder block or brick wall, which require digging footers. Lower frequencies will hip right over – bass heavy music, harleys. Semi trucks etc. you may see a 50% reductions in upper mid and high frequencies (speech, high parts of music, circular saw.). Not sure what your issues are, you could also do a tongue and groove treated lumber fence, some sound will get through in addition to the diffraction (people talking etc).

with the concrete walls in ireland, if someone is sitting on one side of one having quiet conversation, they will be afforded enough privacy that they people on the other side of the wall will not heat it. running a lawnmower or turning a radio up loud, that is another story.

Mineral wool and fiberglass are the most common materials. It’s a relatively easy and cost-effective way to improve the soundproofing of a room.

in europe, in perpetually moist places like ireland and even jolly old england, they seem to use masonry walls as back yard fences. at least in the urban areas, like Dublin. they are as sound proof as it can get. of course these are expensive and that surprises me but i suppose having something that resists rot is the goal more so than sound proofing.

i thought the same thing no permitz did. and then i thought how rich you would be if you developed one. and then i thought of some of my relations with excess land on the north fork and how they built berms on their frontage along North Road (rt 48 to the new comers or to “foreigners” as my uncle uses to call anyone who lived west of riverhead). so i googled sound proof fence and it returned something titled like this “sound proof barrier construction” and these are quite attractive. some look a little like those walls they build along interstates that pass through populated areas but some are real sharp looking wood and they have to be a few inches thick. if they are not available locally, they look like something you can probably have a carpenter build (i am not putting myself forth) if you can locate some plans. it looks like they are 6″ thick doubled walled fences and i am not sure if there is anything inside, but maybe some sort of insulation as mentioned in the post above? this sounds like it will cost with labor, about 3, even 4, times the price of an already well built and high end looking fence (not the $29.00 sections from HD)

google is a wonderful thing. it allows people like me and urbandad to look things up and make it sound like we know a lot of stuff.

Adding a soundproofing substance dubbed “mass-loaded vinyl” to a wooden noise-barrier fence is one way to increase its efficacy. Rolls of the stock are available for purchase. Check to see if it’s approved for outdoor use.
