Sound proof a brownstone

Our house is on a busy corner. The long side of the house is also directly across from a fire station. It’s to the point of moving or seperation if we can’t resolve this!
I wonder if anyone else has had luck with citiwindow or city proof or another vendor?
I assume we would need to do the whole house but I wonder if it would work as items actually shake from the trucks going past and the siren blasts come directly at and within feet of our windows as the make the turns into the street.
Also: anyone have experience with the cost? I’m looking at 20 windows if we skip the basement level. If not add another 10.

@chemosphere: google ‘Seek Thermal’ or ‘Flir One’. These are attachments for the iphone/android that work better than what you can rent at HD. The cost around $180 renting costs around $ 100 I believe.

Bob Marvin – I asked the crew across the street from us if they could not blast the horn in the middle of the night unless it was completely necessary. There was a long pause, silence, and then one of the firemen said “if we’re up, you’re up” and they all laughed. From that day on they hit the horn louder and longer and every damn time they pulled out . So long story short, learn from my mistake!

Soundproofing windows is a good step, but adding soundproofing and insulation to your walls can also help. I would never think to ask the Firemen to alter their routine…sounds like you’re new to City life?

I don’t know if anyone has ever asked. The guys in that firehouse ARE pretty responsive. I wonder if I colld ask them to stop blasting their horn when they reach my house, before turning onto Bedford Avenue? To tell the truth my wife and I hardly noticed it after the first 10 or 20 years.

Have you tried talking to the fire fighters to see if they can hold off on the sirens until after your block? We used to live across the street from a firehouse and they never put their sirens on until after they were past our block.

Sorry Irene, I misunderstood. It sounded like your contractor installs the windows and does something to them afterwards. I always assume the worst, in Brooklyn construction everything is possible.

These window threads make me itchy. People wouldn’t accept a draft in their car, would they? It’s totally OK to spend 40k on a car and only 150 on a window at home depot. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

i lived across from the firehouse on carlton and myrtle. we put city proof windows in the bedroom and it helped a little bit, but you could still hear the trucks coming and going. As others have said, you get used to it eventually.

We did the back of the Brownstone a couple of weeks ago, didn’t do the laminate back there as it is very quiet already and saved the extra expense for the front. It is so much warmer and quieter with just the back done. I do agree about the window units, as soon as we stick those in next summer you loose your sound proofing help. I am going to look into some sort of ac on the roof next year, with venting through the ceilings upstairs. Not using window units.

Bearn96, how old are your windows?

I looked into the window inserts from those companies and they are a lot more expensive than I imagined, so for us — with really old crappy vinyl replacement windows, ancient leaky sealant, and no insulation in weight pockets — we figured we’d bite the bullet and pinch our pennies to do a full on replacement brick to brick instead.

We went with lammy over dissimilar glass bc it offered security on top of noise reduction. If you’re not as worried about security, dissimilar could be a good way to go since it’s cheaper. However, I read that lammy blocks some frequencies better than dissimilar, and vice versa so that may be worth investigating. To what extent one is better than the other I didn’t really get into since lammy was a given for us, and I think the difference in sound reduction is negligible.

But if your windows are pretty new or window replacement not in the cards, I do understand that the inserts would be a v ery good solution. The theory works soundly in principle — putting as much distance between panes is a HUGE help.

We’re hoping that with the brick to brick install (that includes insulation for the weight chain area that is probably currently missing) and new caulk/sealing will also help reduce sound leakage.

And EJR I def agree with you on double hung vs casement/tilt and turn — if you have central/mini split/Unico it’s def the way to go.

But casement/tilt and turn don’t work well with standard window A/Cs and I refuse to pay the premium for the casement A/Cs. Mini split/Unico installation is still a ways off for us too.

There is a limit to how soundproof double hung windows can be given the inherent nature of their design (having two separate panels). When we redid our windows, we installed double hung windows in the front of our house, but single-pane casement windows in the back. The single pane windows insulate sound far more sound than the double hung windows, in my subjective opinion.

Hey Irene, Please update for sure on the lammy — we have laminated double paned windows coming mid-December, partially bc for sound reduction, and we’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’m assuming you’re doing brick-to-brick install? Wood frame/clad?

I not sure what the remark about after market laminations is about. My new windows are windows are custom made, ordered through windows are we. They are made with laminated glass and double paned. I should know I have been waiting for a long time for these. They have to laminate the glass before they build the windows, which is why it takes longer.
