Someone Is Dumping Garbage In Front Of Our House! What To Do?

Someone is regularly leaving bags of garbage in front of our house – nearly daily. It’s not a neighbor, it’s someone from somewhere else. Weird I know. A neighbor said he once saw someone drive up in a car and leave a bag of garbage but I don’t know more than that. They leave it at all times — not on days when there is a pickup scheduled. So of course others put garbage on it while it’s sitting out there. This has been going on for months and is making me crazy, esp if I go away for a week. I’ve reported it repeatedly to 311 but nothing has changed. It happens at night. Generally these are disposal bags and they’re tied , which is preferable to dumping raw trash, but I still need to figure out how to address this. All ideas welcome.

Ha well here’s how it turned out (and I did report it to 311, they were very helpful and wrote it up as two types of complaints – illegal dumping and chronic illegal dumping or something like that. Not that anything happened as a result but hey) And I did ask my garbagemen (sorry, not the PC term) and they told me I was basically f-ed unless I caught them in the act, which today I did. Culprit was as they say right under my nose hiding in plain sight. Across the street from me is a municipal building. The sidewalk in front of it is cleaned by an organization called ACE Programs, which hires people “who have histories of homelessness, incarceration and addiction.” to “provide daily supplemental sanitation.” In my case that supplementation didn’t extend to properly disposing of the garbage. I took their photos and sent it to their employer. I was pretty near going crazy though, could not figure out what to do. This has been going on for months and it’s been r eally aggravating – they leave garbage and then other people throw loose garbage on top of that. I’m relieved it’s over. I ran into a sanitation cop today in a store. He agreed with me that this is probably a business and said they have probably been caught before and will continue to do this, moving to another street, if they get caught now on your street. It is their modus operendi.

He told me you really need a picture or video and if you can find evidence in the trash, that helps. License plate is needed.

He said you have to call 311. He did tell me if you run into a sanitation cop on the street like i just did, they will come over and take a report.

ok, i once managed a building in manhattan. commercial buildings pay for sanitation services. someone was leaving trash in front of our building at night, regularly. this is what i did: i went through the trash and found was it was a restaurant across the street. They were putting it out late at night, after they closed. i trained a security camera on them and caught them carrying the stuff over and told them if they did it again, i would call sanitation police. that stopped it.

to get sanitation to respond, you might have to find out who is doing it and point the finger at the culprit. keep in mind, you can buy a wild life camera (for like $39) and set it up to take video or stills every few seconds (motion activated); if you get an address out of the trash and have a photo, it should make this easy.

it used to be that you could call the sanitation police directly. now they may make you go through 311 and you see where that got you. if you cannot reach them, you can try coming back here and i can see if someone i know at sanitation can get me the direct number.

could be the same kind of people who will dump all their trash into your dumpster just because it’s there. If nothing else, the camera potentially protects you should you start getting hit with sanitation summonses.

I wonder if it would deter them. It’s so weird — why would someone do that? I was thinking maybe they’re mentally ill or something, I don’t know. But it’s a lot of garbage for one person to generate.
