Solid Plumber Needed for last night's deluge

Colleagues, I need to find a solid plumber who knows some expert or out-of-the box solutions to dealing with the torrential downpoors we had last night and the flooding they can cause.

Please come back with someone who has experience with heavy rain water solutions.

Thank you!

When there is a rainfall like Monday’s (3″/hour according to the City), I think the water put into the system from the plumbing appliances is small compared to the water coming off the roof via the drainpipe. In other words, not using your plumbing fixtures will not solve the backup caused by a closed backflow preventer.

One of my old Project Managers, who now works for my brother actually, once said: “Who ever finds a practical, reasonable solution to overflowing rainwater in Brooklyn will be a millionaire within a year.” I think it was the truest statement I have ever heard in plumbing.

@no-permitz, most of our neighbors would disagree with your assessment as they are having issues as well. We have had a video scope of our sewer and its fine. We are looking into a backflow preventer as we do have two sewer lines that combine at the front of the house and could just do the backflow on domestic waste knowing that we have about 40′ or so of drain pipe to store domestic use during those brief times the backflow would engage. @masterplumber that is about what I would expect and seems like its a more surefire solve for the long term.

I would recommend the installation of sewage ejector as a replacement of the house trap. Problem with backflow valves is that you will not be able to use your plumbing during backups from the street when the valve closed. Any plumber can do it.

All in, it was about $10,000 eight years ago, so I don’t really recommend it as a first course of action.
www.72fmechanical.com
I’ve seen more sewer backup problems in the Park Slope area than anywhere else in New York. In fact I only get requests for backwater valves in Park Slope at this point.
But whatever, let no-permitz sort this out for you.

@4thSt, unless you are in Gowanus on 4th st, you don’t need such a contraption. Sewers tend to be deep in Park Slope so if you are having backups, you have another problem.

@masterplumber can you give a sense of cost for putting in a system like that for a 2 family home?

The problem with adding a “backflow preventer” to a home’s drain pipe is that once it closes you won’t know it and if someone in your home uses water it can’t get out except through the lowest fixture which may cause a flood in the home after all. I once installed a check valve, sometimes called a backwater valve, on a house drain line that had a problem with backing up and flooding every time it rained more than moderately. After the valve, I installed an overflow system which would spill the excess water into a sump receiver (tank) and then pump it back into the sewer on the street side of the closed check valve. It worked and and continues to work very well. It was very expensive but it solved every problem, including allowing the landlord to retain the garden level tenant.

Agree w/ Bob.

Have you had the sewer snaked recently?

Could also be a broken sewer – and that’s expensive

Call a drain cleaner with a camera.

@BobMarvin is probably right. I might have a little shell shock from dealing with our situation and I’ve been feeling so much like a hammer of late that everything looks like a nail. Ha! : ) Hoping it’s the latter in your instance, as it would be much easier to fix.

It might not be as serious as Jhcovert’s situation, Perhaps your sewer line is partially blocked. by tree roots or debris, and needs to be snaked out.

If you are in Brooklyn, you may want to explore using heavy duty back flow preventers, but even then you may face back flow. I’ve been told by several people who work in construction that the street sewer lines in Brooklyn are not sufficiently large enough to handle the flow when there are massive near-flash flood conditions. We had to add a sump pump just below the closest overflow point due to these issues.
