Snow preparation

Any recommendations on which brand of salt/ice melt and shovel to get (especially for stoop and sidewalk)? Also any tips and things in general that we should do to winterproof our brownstone please? Thanks!

When I finished restoring my stoop my mason told me to put a thin dusting of masonry sand on the steps before a snow and to use a plastic shovel for snow removal. It works like a charm and over the course of a winter you have enough sand residue to help out when your a snow takes you by surprise. In the spring a good power wash takes all the extra sand away.

2nd the use of calcium chloride for sidewalks and stoops.

I also finds it helps to use an old-timey corn broom to sweep the stoop when there is not too much snow. Our stoop is all “brownstone” with no metal railings and it can be a pain to remove snow from there. Sweeping down from the top step helps. I always try to remove every bit of snow as often any that is left behind turns to ice.

Not necessarily brownstone specific, but when dealing with wood steps and brick sidewalks I found mixing in sand helped – better for the surrounding plants, provided traction and cut down on the amount of salt that someone else insisted on using. The city has a lot of regulations no matter what you do if you go the right and legal way. We have had little problems with running Pex under sidewalk as long as the proper paperwork is filed; even put it on a brownstone steps once before which was super cool to see in action.
As a facility that has two office dogs, we have a heart for their paws in the salt!

@chris: there was a person on here some years back who was trying to do that and apparently the city had a lot of red tape about such a thing. i think there were some additional costs, can’t recall for sure. leave it to the city to shut down innovation and progress.

calcium chloride will not harm the walks but i smashed a lump of it last winter and the bits flew into the beds and killed some old boxwood. so be ware.
