Smart meter fiasco – Obstruction for smart meter installation for Con Ed
Are anyone experiencing the same problem I’m having? Con ed sent twice a contractor to install the smart meter this summer.
However, there’s a metal pipe obstruction (sewer pipe most likely) in front of the meter preventing this new smart device installation. The contractor Souther asked me to call con ed and tell them of my issue and see if they will install a brand new meter or move the meter more in to create more space ( the whole device). I’m concerned to call con ed and have them enter my home and start looking for other problems. I have a record from 2012 that I failed a plumbing test and that I might not be current with the gas piping code.
Has anyone opted out for the smart meter from con ed ( for residencial). Any insights will be appreciated.

So wait, you thought it was OK to let Con Ed’s contractor in, but dont want to let Con Ed in? If you are in Brooklyn, Con Ed doesnt care about your gas service. You can opt out, but they will make you pay one way or another.

If you are concerned with a utility company entering your home, then don’t let them in!!! Smart meters are so Con Ed can get your meter reading, however, if you are available to let the tech in on meter rding day you don’t need it… Also, if you aren’t available , you can email coned customer service and send a photograph of your meter reading!!! You can also call in your meter reading on the reading date by phone!!!
