Smart lock for ornamental gate

Hi All,

We have an ornamental gate under the stoop with a Marks lock. I think it’s the fairly standard doorknob with a cylinder above it. The key will turn the deadbolt and pull the catch as well. I’m pulling my hair out trying to figure out which smart lock will work with it either as is or with modifications. Has anyone done this successfully and have any advice?

On the inside of the date is a thumb turn for the deadbolt. I’ve wondered if I could remove the thumb turn and install a smart lock that manually locked and unlocked the deadbolt but I’m not certain whether any of the smart locks have the right actuator. Calling locksmiths hasn’t helped me.

I can consider. I have a project i must clear this week and the homeowner reads everything i put here. You may wish to send me a photo. I will check my catalog and see what locks i can get, what models of schlage or yale.

Also, i have two z wave wi fi sending units here that we did not use on a job. Before i return them to wholesaler, i will offer them to anyone here at wholesale. They were like 58 each.

i researched the august lock late 2021. it appears that they only work for cylindrical locks.

the unit i installed was cylindrical and over a new hole bored in the gate, where the mortise had been located. i cannot recall. i did it on a customer’s gate. not mine.

many locksmiths do not want to get into modifications. their billing is set up as a simple service call, in/out/ 1 hour or less, get paid. this kind of work you mention might mean back and forth. you require a door person.

Thanks very much – I figured I had to either replace the and maybe do some welding although I’d be open to a more niche product if I could just find it or even figure out what to search for. I’d love to see what you did on your door if you don’t mind.

Looking at the tail piece I’d think a little clever adapting could allow one of the smart locks that simply replace the thumbturn would work. Maybe a 3D printed piece. That would, of course, require someone smarter than me to figure out. Maybe something along these lines:

Most modern locks are “cylindrical”. They were invented by walter schlage in like 1927. The marks is an older style lock a mortise. That is why a conversion will have to be done if you switch to a cylindrical.

I bet someone makes a high end mortise smart lock. But since MOST modern homes use cylindrical locks, these specialized mortise locks cost a lot.

You cannot make a smart lock work with that mortise lock and no that tailpiece is different in the smart lock.

Essentially, the tailpiece on the smartlocks is the same as the tail pieces for all of the cylindrical deadbolts. In other words, the schlage tail piece for the smart lock works with the bolt for the regular schlage deadbolt. Same with yale.

I put a smart lock on a gate as covid began. I forget what kind. I can find out.

So it might be possible to put a lock there with modification to the mortise pocket. The gates may also be too thin so it has to be bulked out with something
