Small Steel Deck Visible from Street in Landmarked Neighborhood?

I’m looking for examples of steel decks (off parlor) that have been approved in Landmarked districts. I have a corner property where the rear of the parlor is visable from the street. I’m looking to put in a small deck (not full width) with stairs down to the garden. Enough space for a small BBQ and landing, essentially a gloried fire escape. I’m in the process of drawing it with my drafts-person and looking for inspiration photos. Has anyone been through the process?

This is one of those areas that if you apply for it, it will be rejected. If you go ahead and do it and then get a violation you can argue that it is in fact needed as a fire escape (even though you are only a two family) and they may wave it. Or if it stays on as a Landmark violation, it is not considered a major issue because it is an added safety (fire escape) feature. If any future buyer wants the violation cleared, then you offer to take the deck off… they change their mind.
Unless you have neighbors that call, the Landmarks/ building dept may well never notice it. Plant a tree or wisteria to camouflage it.

Please note: Steel deck flooring will retain the heat of May and radiate it up & out towards you through Sept. and the iron railings “generally” are a cold steel look if you stick with the DOB requirements, short of getting a variance. If you don’t like wood, try glass instead of metal, as they are popular & resistant to summer heat in cities like Istanbul.

We have a steel deck which was approved by landmarks. Generally they seem to be more interested in railing style than deck materials…

Thanks Arkady, Is that visible from the street? I think that house is in the middle of the block. My concern with my house is that it’s VERY visible from the street. I’m looking for some context as to what would be acceptable so I can draw the deck for filing.
