skylight ventilation for interior bedrooms?

We are renovating a rowhouse and our architect has suggested two interior bedrooms for the top floor. Each would have only a skylight for light and ventilation. Has anyone done this? Does it get stuffy? Any other problems?

If you do go with the skylight-only rooms, make sure that the skylight is angled to the North, so that you don’t get direct sunlight inside the house – this should cut down on the cooling load during the height of the summer and make the quality of light much better. Skylights also need a certain amount of slope so that rain will wash them clean – flat or extremely low-slope skylights will tend to build up a bit of grit and dirt very quickly. I wouldn’t do this unless you are putting in forced-air ventilation (mini-splits provide cooling but no fresh air).

I grew up in a house with a tin roof over the front porch. I love the sound of rain on roofs and skylights at night. I’m assuming you need the space for another bedroom but I turned my top floor interior room into a giant ensuite bathroom for the master bedroom. It had two skylights. And I could hear the rain n them from the bedroom!!!

I agree with no-permitz the middle of upper brownstone floors is best suited for bathrooms, closets, laundry, etc. The house I am describing with a center room with a skylight is an original two-family, rather late (1890s), and the top floor is laid out like a floor-through apartment in a small two or three family building . The middle room with a skylight is meant to be a bedroom.

We also have one of these original rooms with original skylight. Used to have pocket doors on one side, now replaced with french doors. The tenants use it as a dining room.
If you are doing a reno with mini splits or windowless AC of some sort ventilation isn’t an issue. I say go for it.
I love the sound of rain on a skylight.

Our top floor apartment has a room in the center with a skylight and no windows. Originally, it was constructed with pocket doors on each side, opening into the front and rear rooms, to allow for light and ventilation or privacy as needed. When we moved in, the pocket doors had been removed and openings blocked up with walls. It would get so hot up there in the warm months I can’t imagine the room being habitable during the summer. I would not be surprised if it would get over 100 degrees in there. We removed the partitions and now it is open to the other rooms and nice and breezy. We would love to have the original pocket doors but they were gone. I once lived in a rental with a similar room with pocket doors and it was wonderfully quiet and dark in there for sleeping. Loved it. If I were doing a major remodel, I would consider putting in (solid) pocket doors on each side. (And I’d try to make sure they are installed with an overlap at the sides and bottoms to keep out noise.) Good luck.

A bedroom with a skylight is extremely noisy during a down poor, especially during a storm.
Unless the skylight is cracked open at all times, there will be virtually no ventilation and especially during the winter a major loss of heat.
